Thats right siege, but the J-20 does call the MIG-1.42 Momma, nobodys ever seen the Mig1.42 in a decade and the Su-47 was never serious, but the J-20 is fairly lengthy as well as rotund, and all that mass, well, # 1 I have never nor do I now believe the J-20 has any roll as an Attack Aircraft, and #2 the Western definition of interceptor is a LONG RANGE, Fast Fighter, designed to go out an stop the bad guys, the J-20s picture is in the dictionary in that role, and I can't for the life of me determine why that is an insult, nobody's saying it won't turn, it will quite likely be very agile, but it is what it is and the laws of physics are what they are.

I think a lot of the push back isn't because of insult, but on a more rudimentary dispute about credible sources and accuracy of information. For example, the notion that the J-20 is genealogically related to the 1.44 seems pretty baseless and founded on speculation, especially for those who've followed the J-20's development for years. There is also nothing to base mass on, simply because mass isn't something you can guesstimate from a picture, and it'd be hard to know just how well the plane rolls with its anhedral wings. I think too much hasty speculation and not enough facts deserve some kind of push back.

maybe unrelated to the J-20 here, but related to the rocket pod question.

During the latest Zhuhai Airshow, China presented a semi-active laser guided rocket for its 90mm rocket pods they love to use so much. The specs arent bad, as its range is 8km and would have a very accurate and simple guidance mode, enabling the PLAAF (and the PLA LH) to finally make their FFARs into guided weapons.

Similiar systems were tested and employed by the USAF as well:

not correct the MiG-1.44 has been seen, in fact is in Zhukovski

and Su-47 is alive and well, and originally Su-47 was designed as a naval fighter and was used to tests the internal weapons bays concept for PAKFA

it was later on that Sukhoi won the tender for a fifth generation, but the concept that won was not Su-47 but PAKFA.

The Russian defence ministry called for a smaller fighter than MiG-1.44 for economic reasons, MiG-1.44 was very expensive.

However both jets were deemed tech demostrators, from that picture we see J-20 is around almost the same size of Flanker around 21 meters without pitot tube and around 22 with it, the western assertion was the jet was around 23 meters long, and i think they were close since you see J-20 has a pitot test tube which is not visible.

Does anyone know if the scale on the pic compare to known specs of the other aircraft is correct? Because if it is, the J-20 is a little over 20m by that scale.

For a plane, the difference between 20 and 23 meters is pretty big (best estimates put it at under 21 meters without pitot tube)

EDIT: revoke statement on pitot tube. 2001's was pretty long.

It would match every other estimate we're getting. Unless there's some statistical bias that every method we've used to measure the J-20 shares, I'd say we have a statistically reasonable lock on the length.

Yeah. The image totally confirms that the J-20 is a 23-25 meter long behemoth.

On a serious note. Notice how both the MIG-1.42 and Su-47 are the same size or bigger than the J-20 but no one calls them fighter-bombers or pure interceptors???

The West said the jet was around 23 meters long
that picture shows a jet almost as big as a Flanker, Su-27 is 21.9 meters
Aircraft dimensions:
- length, m
- wingspan, m
- height, m
21.9
14.7
5.9

with a pitot tube in front of the nose the J-20 is easily close to 23 meters, in fact the West estimate was pretty accurate.

The body of the J-20 is around 20.5-21.5 meters for sure at least 2 meters longer than the F-22.

See the F-22 fuselage without tailplanes is around 17 meters and 19 with tailplanes that makes the J-20 substantially bigger than F-22

Yet J-20 is still quite significantly smaller than the J-15/Su-33 next to it, which is 21.19m long...

Almost a meter shorter, it seems.

And no, western estimates were still way off. Their calls of 23 meters long clearly was effective aircraft length, not aircraft+air data probe.

Incidentally, this makes the previous pictorial estimates of ~20m very accurate. Well done, those who participated about a year ago!

Actually, if you look closely you would notice J-20 and J-15 actually have the same length. The J-15 was parked a bit forward of the J-20 which gives the illusion that the latter aircraft is shorter. However, keep in mind that Su-33 doesn't have a sting and is shorter than a typical Flanker, which means J-20 is also shorter than a typical Flanker such as Su-27.
