Iunno why i have the opposite experience though. I step on the gas better with shoes. Not sure if it's because I'm used to stepping the pedal with shoes.
Have you compared shoes with different bottoms. Thin bottoms help me have finer control. My wife tends to complain more about my driving when I have my cowboy boots on. And I can feel it myself. I would think I'm stepping on the gas as usual, but the car is not moving much. So I try a Lille harder, then the car jumps out. The same goes with stopping. I guess it has a lot to do with what you normally wear. Even if you wear shoes with think bottom, you can calibrate the amount of force used by your feet to achieve certain driving style. Once you switch to another type of shoes, you lose that scale and driving becomes choppy. It would take you a couple minutes to calibrate your feet again to fit the new shoes.
What actually matters is the driving style. I tend to drive kind of crazy. So my acceleration and stop are always not that smooth. So, no matter what kind of shoes I wear, I will calibrate my feet to achieve my favorite driving style. It might take me some extra time to get to my optimal style if I'm not wearing my usual shoes. So my driving will be extra choppy when I have new shoes on. All it takes is a couple minutes, I will get back to my usual driving.
