Via Hongjian, over at CDF

Studies for a semi stealthy J-15 tactical jammer ala EF-18G. In the first photo, they show a model of EF-18G compared with a J-15 equivalent. Note the three jamming pods. Also, it's meant to be catapult launchable
Third picture gives a better view of the shape changes to reduce RCS.

Hopefully this is what J-15B will be. This kind of plane is the exact type that PLANAF needs, and preferably a variant for PLAAF based on J-16 as well.

Maybe it will end up resembling Shenyang's heavy tri-wing stealth fighter configuration when the J-20 beat out years ago?

J-15 for catapult? the front landing gear of the "new" j-15 looks changed comparing to the landing gear of older j-15. plus it looks similar to the landing gear of a f-18 when compared together

It was already posted and discussed in the carrier thread.

Actually, as Deino pointed out on the carrier thread, what it really looks like is the older Soviet/Russian proposal for a CATOBAR capable SU-33.

Same news from some less reliable sources :D

J-15 carrier-based fighter modified for catapult launch

A model of China's J-15 carrier-based fighter displayed by an unknown ship design & research institute indicates has revealed that the PLA Navy is modifying the landing gear of the fighter for future aircraft carriers designed with catapults, reports the state-run Global Times.

The landing gear retraction jack of the new J-15 seems to be thicker compared to earlier models, said the report. The nose gear seems to be designed for catapults and arresting gear. Since the Liaoning, China's only carrier in service, is not equipped with a catapult, all J-15 fighters have to be pulled to the afterdeck for launching. The new design can save time for the PLA Navy in the future.

Li Xiaojian, a military expert in Beijing, said that adding the catapult system to aircraft carriers is a global naval trend. Even though new carrier-based stealth fighters are currently under development, the J-15 must serve the PLA Navy for the next 20 or 30 years. It is now extremely important for China to design new J-15 to be launched by catapult.

The steam catapult is more likely to be seen aboard China's domestically built carriers in the future, said Li, though the system has its weaknesses. Its size is considered too large to operate from a medium-sized aircraft carrier like the Liaoning, a refitted Soviet-era carrier bought from Ukraine. Electromagnetic propulsion systems would be optimal for China, he said.

704 Institute , also called Shanghai Marine Equipment Research Institute is hardly unknown. They are probably building the catapult.

It is a mock up. Even if it is actually meant to represent a modified J-15 for catapult launch obviously it is going to lack details because it is a mock up.

I'm sure that if such a modified J-15 emerges it would be sufficiently strengthened for its purposes. And let's be frank, the real J-15s front landing gear as it is already "looks" pretty solid as it is. It is the internal structural strengthening to resist the horizontal acceleration of catapult launch that is important.

It is best not to read too much into the detail of the picture given it is a mock up. At best we can assume that it may be related to the catapult strengthened J-15.
