I think this comes from the report showing J-15 with serial number 108 showing that there are at least 9 production J-15 painted at this point.

I would surmise the first indigenous carrier built ground up will probably hold a higher honored place. Afterall, even though Liaoning is a commissioned ship, the navy still refers to her as a training carrier. It feels like they are reserving the distinction of China's first fully active carrier to the first 100% indigenous carrier.

As they should.

In regards to Liaoning, she is a vital part in the growth of the PLAN and the training program and as such will never be sold, and certainly not to a nation like Pakistan as a poster above had suggested earlier.

First of all, Pakistan can't possibly afford an aircraft carrier and all the accompanying gear it also must buy to field a CBG. Even if China gave massive loans to Pakistan to buy the stuff, it's not at all clear Pakistan could operate the Liaoning or run a BG. Finally, beyond being great for deck aviation training, the Liaoning BG far outclasses anything she'll see in the SCS, not named the USN. Nope, the Liaoning would not be sold, and after she's decommissioned, she'll have an honored place as a museum.

Like you said most likely will go down as a naval museum piece one day. The ONLY possible nation that may buy Liaoning is possibly Indonesia in the next 2 or 3 decades. Indonesia has a very ambitious plan for their Navy in the coming decades.

If it comes down to it, Indonesia would probably go for a new carrier than buying the Liaoning. It doesn't need a large one, so maybe a mid-size CATOBAR carrier of around 40-50kt might do the trick. Indonesia would have options from Mig-29, carrier version JL-9, or even J-31s for its airwings.

Who currently offers a carrier in the 40-50kt range? French would be the closest but they aren't even building a second one for themselves.

India's Vikrant is 40kt but it is STOBAR.

Indigenous? That's a tall order.

I was talking about Chinese shipyards building a brand spanking new 40-50kt CATOBAR for the Indonesian Navy. It's not beyond their capabilities, and at present, on one could compete on price.

The day Indonesia buys a 40-50kt CATOBAR carrier from Chinese shipyards would mean relations between the two are even better than now and Chinese naval ships have reached a new level of competitiveness in the export market.

Sino-Indonesian relations are fairly good right now, so if Indonesia wants to buy a new 40kt STOBAR AC from China, my guess is she would sell it.
