I also have the impression that YangWei, aka J-20 chief designer was in charge of J-10 fly-by-wire development back then with Israel tech transfer.It was way too expensive for China. They did collaborate with Grumman for J-8II Peace Pearl and they had an opportunity to observe it.
Similarly the French showcased Mirage 2000 and got a Chinese pilot to fly in it during the 80s. Even after Jun 4th incident some level of contact was kept, and they even sold the CATIA design software which helped during design phase of J-10.
