J-10 Thread IV

Looks like these new planes are flying with WS-10B engines. These must be from production badge number 2 (or is it the J-10C ?). But doesn't China still have about 200 AL-31FN III engines still unused ?

These look to be J-10Bs; they are missing that extra pair of antennae on its vertical stabilizer. However, I do expect the J-10C to enter production very soon, if not already.

According to Adam.Y on his observations on some differences regarding AL-31FN engines and Taihang engines:

The AL-31FN engines afterburner takeoff flames looks glamorous blue that's very beautiful to look at, Taihang engine afterburner takeoff flames on the other hand is mainly red and purple somewhat similar to RD-93's color.

The afterburner sounds also different from each other, with Taihang engine seems much deeper, heavier, and steady like bass. And AL-31FN engine sounded more explosive that makes your internal organs tremor.

And J-20 number 2016 with afterburner takeoff also sounded different than previous J-20s. It's got this strong puff sound just like a Taihang equiped J-10B he saw once. Haha.....

And regarding rumors of J-31 in CAC is not true, at least he didn't see it. Don't believe all the internet rumors and think about the information yourself. And lastly he is not very happy about people using his pictures without giving out credits and removing his watermark from the pictures.

The information about AL-31FN and Taihang engines afterburner flame is obviously not new at all, but the reason I did a little translation on his post was because what he said about the 2016 engines difference right after that is kind of interesting. It seems like he was hinting about something.......:p

seavon make the J-10B pics into a gif.

Surprise, surprise ... finally - at least as I remember - more Batch 02 birds. again with the AL-31FN Series 3 and an interesting missile, that looks longer than a standard PL-12.

Deino

I wonder why are we seeing some J-10B using ws-10 engines and others using AL-31 engines.

Can someone tell me what the freggin hell is going on????

Batch 02 is still using AL-31????

When I ask when will they use WS10???

Why add it on a few prototypes then start batch 02 with Al-3-1 !!

You asked a similar question a while back, and I provided an answer -- at this stage I think the answer is the same, with one difference (bolded below)

https://www.sinodefenceforum.com/j-10-thread-iv.t7305/page-40#post-369324

At present:
  • Confirmed: J-10Bs produced, powered by Al-31s with one large batch complete
  • Confirmed: more J-10Bs powered by Al-31s (batch two)
  • Confirmed: J-10Cs powered by Al-31s undergoing flight tests, likely preparing for production soon
  • Confirmed: one J-10 prototype airframe (likely J-10B, possibly 1035 from a few years back) seen doing flight tests with a WS-10
In future:
  • J-10B (powered by Al-31) production will be superseded by J-10C in mass production, where an initial batch or more may be powered by Al-31
  • J-10Cs in production will eventually be mass produced with WS-10s
