I give the training missiles some thought and remember something I read about 10 years go. The article was describing the "August 1st" fly demonstration team and said unlike most other air show teams out there, the aircraft they use is not a stripped down version but fully combat capable. That might explain, why they have training missile.

I don't think that's true for J-10, as we saw during the demo at the 2008 ZhuHai Air Show.Or they may fly better with the missiles than without. Some fighters are actually designed that way.

That demo was mainly about the climb, which means minimal weight. I don't agree with you because all the flight prototypes of the J-10, right from the very start, always had dummy PL-8s. That means as they are calibrating flight performance and collecting flight telemetry with those dummy missiles on board.
