it's quite possible. I am under the impression also that FC-20 was delayed because PAF was lacking the funding to purchase it. Either way, it would make sense to make a customized version for PAF based on J-10B.

But why then a completely new letter ?? ... wouldn't - and as already common for other fighters from CAC - a designation like F-10PB fit much better ??:confused:

J-10C has been speculated to be an upgraded J-10B with AESA radar and WS-10B engine. Both features origianally were supposed be found onboard J-10B. However as we all know the production of WS-10B has been delayed and consequently that delayed the production of J-10B for at least a couple years. By the time the J-10B equipped with PESA (??) and AL-31FN was finally in production early this year, the AESA radar and WS-10B engine were almost ready. You may call J-10C as J-10B 02 batch, similar to J-8B 02 batch, which were later designated as J-8D. I think it is possible that this "downgraded" J-10B would only be produced in one batch. The 02 batch would be the J-10C standard, but that again would depend on a mature WS-10B engine, which has yet to be seen.

In the photo's that we have seen from 201 it has the same Russian engine as the rest. And would they produce just a handfull of PESA radars just for the first batch of J-10B's ? Not very efficient both from a economic and logistical point of view. But that 201 plane does seem to have what looks like a extra antenna below. That is about the only physical difference between 201 and the rest of the production planes. Is 201 even the J-10C ?

Accroding to a post at dsjunshi, the difference between J-10B and C is the thrust power of engine. Consequently, J-10C would be put into mass production. Existing J-10B would be modified to J-10C configurations.

J-10B prototype tried PESA radar and adopted AESA radar later. It is found that PESA radar needs to be enlarged by 30% to meet the requirements. An enlarged cross section will harm performance if no more powerful engine. Thus PESA was replaced by AESA which features with an even smaller cross section than original slotted array antenna.

I think that both the link and huitong are quite consistent.

Same like CAC's FC1 is PAF's JF17.

No, FC-1 is the original Chinese project designation for an export-related "Fighter China", which was later adopted by the PAF and introduced as the JF-17.

When a specialized PAF J-10B would be called JF-19 or FC-20 or whatever it might make sense, but either it gets a "F-10" designation with a special PAF-letter or it would be a completely different designation, but surely not J-10C !

When did the J-10C get twin engines?

It would be a big step if the lastest J-10Cs are on par with the Gripen NG.

Sadly, but to be honest: NEVER !!!

I think it was probably only our (at least my) wishful-thinking or at best a technical consideration to replace the current AL-31FN with maybe two RD-33/-93 ... but now, never.
