Chile bought 36 Dutch F-16A MLU at an US$ 7 million unit price. You must compare the J-10A with the US$ 50 million unit price for F-16E or Gripen NG at the Brazilian competition. The MiG-35 was coted at an US$ 35 million unit price at the Indian bid.

Pepe

Note that both the F-16 and the Gripen NG are both considerably more capable than the J-10, especially in the avionics fit.

I think pointblank was referring to the F-16E, wich peperez alluded to in the post before that. And I believe Pb is quiet right there.

PB said both were more capable though. In any case, I'm personally not sure that's necessarily true.

The F-16 has a better ECM suite, better radar, and in case of the F-16E/F models, significantly better radar. The Gripen is similar, with a excellent avionics set, ECM, and radar.

I should have specified earlier. I think it's hard to dispute that the F-16E/F is superior to the J-10A but as pointed out beforehand it's far more expensive. I was mainly unsure about the NG's performance compared to the J-10s. However, I've looked over the NG again and you're right--It's clearly a better plane. However, it isn't in production yet, and I'm curious as to how much the NG would cost. In a discussion about plane exports price is an important and limiting factor, so it might be more accurate to gauge performance per price. Also, in the NG's case, by the time it goes into full production could it be possible that the J-10B will also be up for export?

Aside from the F-16E, I doubt what you say.

ECM---The MLU is mostly for export, which is to say, the ECM is not as good as the domestic models. Pretty sure it lacks things like DRFM, and the US does not include a lot of things for the sake of trust. Another point, you don't know much about the state of ECM from the Chinese side. Having said that, the J-10 appears to be implementing a phase shifting directional beaming kind of system on the tail, which allows you to beam multiple beams at different points simultaneously. That looks pretty good to me. When anyone claims ECM is better than the other, one can always say, you got no empirical state to demonstrate that.

Better Radar---Not quite. The APG-66 was originally intended as a small, cheap kind of radar, not so powerful, made to fit size and price points, as well as for export. The original version cannot even be considered suitable for BVR. You can only cram and do so much into the basic design before you replace it completely (F-16E/F).

a TV program on CCTV discussing the prospect of China exporting J-10. There is a bunch of stuff said about J-10.

- First J-10 has excellent maneuverability, so a lot of advantage in WVR combat
- Using J-10 to take orders away from F-16
- J-10's T/W ratio allows for its climb rate, it's sea level acceleration, its roll rate and take-off distance to be very good
- It says that J-10 is mass equipped with ESA radar (didn't mention PESA or AESA), kind of surprising because up to this point, we all thought it was using slotted array radar
- It says that the radar allows it to detect stealth fighters at certain distance (I'm assuming it's saying a respectable distance).
- It says that it is equal to or better than F-16C in most aspects (I think it's being compared to the recent variant in Singapore) and that it's also currently the best fighter in Asia in this category.
- they believe that the climb rate of J-10 is greater than that of Rafale

Pakistan air force personnel has selected french radar over the chinese make KLJ-7 radar for there fleet of FC-1/JF-17 fighter.this despite effort by AVIC to market the KLJ-7.
Pakistani was quite familiar with US/european make avionic, for decade they been operating french/brit/and US make fighters. not to mention hundred of engineers working in the saude/kuwaiti air force.
while they admitted the Chinese make avionic make tremendous progress in the last 10 years, still behind that of european/US.this important factor while PAF has selected european equipment .
