Feng, what's your estimate of when WS-10x engines will be up to Western standards, or even high-end Russian AL-31xx series? I mean the whole package, performance, quality, manufacturabilty, endurance, and cost?

What's this question asking? If the whole package has reached what you would see in a Western engine then it's an exact copy of a Western engine. This is a Chinese engine, so some parameters may be better already, some comparable, and some worse, and it may be designed that way to satisfy Chinese requirements/ approach as opposed to Western requirements. You put cost in there? You mean when a Chinese engine will cost as much as a Western engine? LOL never.

In general, there is no way that anyone without high level clearance and access to secrets can answer your question in any meaningful way, and if someone like that does, he's probably dead meat for doing it.

you should probably ask this over at the Engine thread. I would say there is a gap between Western standards (I'm assuming you are referring to F-100 and F-11) here) and high end AL-31xx. Also, you have to consider factories that produce the engines. There has certainly been well documented problems in Shenyang Liming's role in the problems Taihang problem has encountered. With respect to J-10 project, the question is when do we expect J-10B to use Taihang series of engine. 3 years ago, I would've optimistically said that at least the second batch of J-10B should be using Taihang, but it's hard to make that statement now.

Public figures put WS10 thrusts as higher than the US PW F100 & derivatives.
F100 likely wins on the durability, maintenance but that's negated by higher
costs while China does all the maintenance of their WS10 in-house.
With air wars lasting hours if not minutes and for major powers who can do all
the maintenance, thrusts is the most important to winning the air war.
You start to put more emphasis on durability, maintenance when exporting to
minor powers who don't have spares or cant do maintenance themselves.

better performing planes with reasonability reliability but much cheaper is first priority. If you lose a bunch and manning is not an issue then it is same unless you have lots of area to cover. China is covering China and America has the world.

WS-10 will be used on the export J-10P variant to Pakistan !!!

However, for PLAAF. J-10B will use AL-31FM1 for a while. J-16, J-15, and J-11B will be using WS-10 series engines !!

I've heard similar rumors. I guess the Russians forbid China from putting russian engines in their planes that compete with their products in exporting market.

And the reason that the Chinese are still using russian engines for themselves is that the russian engines are more stable and the service and engineering people may be more familiar with them. Another reason could be that they've already bought too many of AL31 so they need to use them up.

Hi guys ... just a brief "Hello" from an Internet-Cafe here ib Nothern Germany. Sadly after only one week of sun now its almost raining all the times, we have about 13-19 °C ... and it's still called "SUMMER" !!!:(

Anyway I've just noticed that nearly nothing happened since I'm off :( (maybe they are only waiting for the news until I'm back home ) but the most interesting image is this one psed J-10B with the numbers errased.

Does anyone know - maybe via the chats and talks behind - to what units this bird will go ?? I'm sure the number is well known but so far besides the rumours for being slated to the FTTC and the 44. FD replacing the J-10A I've hearn nothing.

So long all the best,
Deino
