Guys ... I think are mixing up a few things: First of all there are two aircraft shown ... 2-39 is simply a twin-seater (original model) from the second block ... whereas all aircraft (not shown) 101-104 are from the first serial block J-10B.

The single aircraft 201 is so far something of a mystery and reportedly said to be a prototype for the J-10C.

So simple...

I believe what you are saying here is right. Although J-10C seems to be a bit of anomaly. If it's really considered different, it should be prototype 1041 or something like that. 201 really isn't the designation given to prototype by CAC, but rather a production aircraft.

The 201 plane is still confusing to me. If this is the second batch of J-10B's then how many planes where build in the first batch ? And does LRIP or pre production planes at CAC have a number ? And how does the numbering system for the LRIP or pre production planes look like ?

Prototypes are usually labeled as 000x. As we saw with j15 for example.
First batch, which is also the preproduction batch, is labeled with 1xy. Again, we saw that with j15.
Preproduction batch is always small. Four to eight airframes usually.
Second batch can easily be 8 to 12 planes, thirdbatch even more, etc.
Its reallyhigh time for a follow up batch to the preproduction batch. So it all really fits.

The paint scheme is a big improvement overall with no more black radome. I just wish the roundel was gray as well.
