And Note That the vast majority were both Russian and nothing post 1997. Thats about the Time When the actual designations began being used. It's not just Aircraft either, Look at the two latest Russian submarines the Yasen and Borei neither have Nato Code names.

The SU-PAK FA has a codename Firefox and the MiG-1.44 Stealth plane prototype that flew in 1998 also had a codename Flatpack.

Yes. There is Fagot, Cock, Crusty and Coke! I'm not making it up!

Actual NATO codenames for Russian planes etc

Antonov AN-22: Cock
Antonov AN-24: Coke
Antonov AN-26: Curl
Tupolev Tu-134: Crusty

but seriously...

fag·ot
noun
a bundle of sticks or twigs bound together as fuel.

The AT-4 Spigot AtM is also known as the 9K111 Fagot as well.

Yes I'm aware of that, but here in American culture the word Fagot is mostly used as derogatory name for homosexuals. How many of us go out and used the word for everyday life and say "I'm going to pick up some fagot to start a campfire" or "I played the fagot in orchestra"? See what I mean?

I wonder if NATO does this on purpose sort of a way to snicker at the former Soviet Union.

Not to get waaay to OT but the term you're referring to is spelled faggot. Also in the UK and a bunch of other countries 'fag' typically refers to mean cigarettes.

OK I think we need to get back on topic instead of getting caught up with silly NATO codenames.
