J-10 Vigorous Dragon is the NATO designation. The codenames for Chinese aircraft tended to be closer to Latinized Chinese then random words for example Q5 Fantan. But the codenames seem to be over. The last Russian fighter codename I know of was SU47 Firkin. Why the stop? The internet. Codenames dated back to the second world war where in the first codenames were assigned to Japanese fighter as they had kept there fighter programs away from western eyes. This continue in the cold war when satellite an overflights gathered most of the Intel on the Russian force. The Russians kept there equipment designations rather bland, Project#s mostly. But today a new fighter is posted all over the web before the first flight. And the name is well known.

J-10 Fearless
J-20 Fantom (spell with an "F")
J-31 Fury

LOL you're thinking too much from PLAAF's strandpoint. I guarantee you NATO codename for these new birds wouldn't be anything 'exotic' ...

It'll probably be more like Fishhead, Fullback, Fidget, Fiddler etc....

And Note That the vast majority were both Russian and nothing post 1997. Thats about the Time When the actual designations began being used. It's not just Aircraft either, Look at the two latest Russian submarines the Yasen and Borei neither have Nato Code names.
