Known serial numbers of 72 Regt, 24 Ftr Division are J-10A 30550-30658 = 19 and J-10S 30851-30854 = 4.

But there must be 5 more J-10A, since they have built 28 shelters (3 x 8 + 4) for the regiment.

Are there any pictures of the J-10S? What specifically is different about the AH? Do you mean a hypothesized version for landing on carriers, or for the PLANAF in general, designed to be operated from bases?

I think You got it wrong a bit !

- The J-10A is the standard PLAAF single-seater ... the AH the equivalent PLANAF-version (not sure if they differer in one way ... maybe some corrosion protections)
- The J-10AS is the standard PLAAF twin-seater often called simply J-10S ... the ASH the equivalent PLANAF-version (often simply called SH)

I really doubt that there are many differences between a J10A and a J10H.

We have never seen any pictures or heard any reports of J10s using AShMs, so it is unlikely that the naval J10s have been optimized for naval strike. There is simply no need for that when the navy has JH7As and Su30MK2s that perform the role much better.

I just think that the navy needed better fighters than the J7s and J8s they currently operate, and the naval J10s will operate in the air superiority role just as the air force's J10s.

Anti-corrosion and maybe improved air to sea search modes for the radar would be the only likely differences. But I really do not think such small chances warrant a whole new designation of J10H.

Yes, using Huitong's site, there is a large gap in between. However, we miss many photos of J-10 regiments. For 1st division, we only have photos of 2 J-10s. And it does seem kind of strange that they would not number J-10s consecutively. It's possible there are some J-10s not stationed in Yangcun but are still in the 24th division. I don't remember seeing a regiment where the numbers are not consecutive after it was fully established.

I can think of other examples of non-continuity in serial numbers, though not in other J-10 regiments.

A fresh example is 5 Attack Division 13 Regt Weifang, which has acquired Q-5J 10465-10468. There are almost certainly not 48 planes in that regiment.

It is true that the lastest GE update 13.09.08 shows 43 Q-5 at Weifang, but I guess that many of those were relocated from 14 Regt Zhuzheng, where there were only 15 Q-5 somewhat earlier (07.03.06). The latest update of Zhuzheng 24.01.10 shows 30 Q-5 (plus 3 presumed JJ-6).

Or 1 Fighter Division 3 Regt which has JJ-7A 11326 and 11327, but certainly not 35 J-8F. Other JJ-7A in other regiments have quite high numbers, too.
