Another nontechnical question for the J-10 experts. Once again I am unsure whether this question has been answered in one of the previous two threads (spent too long going through the thousands of posts lol).

What is the NATO callsign for the J-10? I know that the nickname is "Vigorous Dragon" but NATO callsigns for fighter jets usually start with F, like Fulcrum, Flanker, and Fishbed. Besides "Vigorous Dragon" is a long to be a call sign (imagine a NATO pilot trying to say that fast while engaging J-10s) name.

Has NATO even continued labelling Chinese fighters?

They always do but they don't usually publicly divulge them. The JH-7 for example (introduced 1992) is a relatively new aircraft has the NATO designation 'Flounder'. The J-10 almost certainly has a NATO designation but it has yet to be been brought out into the open yet.

In recent visit of Serbian Minister of Defense mr. Zoran Sutanovac, PLAF demonstrated capabilities of J-10 and showed interest to participate in contest for new Serbian Air Force multirole fighter.

Although Serbia does not have much money for a great number of planes, if J-10 is chosen, it would be a great breakthrough for this great plane on world market. I wonder what is the price of J-10 compared to other aircraft (JAS-39 Gripen, F-16 block 50, Dassault rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon, MiG-29M2, Su-30...), and would China be ready to sell us PL-12/SD-10 missiles?
I believe that it could be a nice start for greater military cooperation between China and Serbia, and maybe it could be possible for our defense industries to cooperate on some projects.

Best regards from Serbia.

Thanks semi-lobster I've finally got a proper answer. Hopefully it won't be an unflattering name like fishbed or faggot :(.

the russian MiG-29 cost $35 million,Fc-1 at $17 million ,J-10-$25 million?
although FC-1 could esily be upgrade with new flight control and electronic to bring it at par with f-16c but still cheaper than MiG-29.

$25m for J10? Would you be kind enough to reveal the source of the claim?

I thought J10 would be somewhere at $35m price range (without any upgrade).

I don't think Challenge had any source... if you follow most of his threads... most of the sources he referenced to are either non-existence or not accurate.

Anyway, to know how much J-10 would cost, I believe you would looked into how much the Chinese paid for their unit plus the following,

1) Logistic cost (transportation to that third party),
2) maintanence cost
3) Spare parts
4) Other items,

Plus if the third party was a first time buyer, it might cost quite a large sum more, because the Chinese might have to set up facilities to support the J-10 in that third party country, and most of these countries might wanted a training package too (which include basic to intermediate technical maintenance, pilot training, etc), and most countries would also want the J-10unit to come with a whole range of weapons and ground control options too.

But for the exact cost of each unit of aircraft, I cannot give you because I do not have the source and reference for it and would are not that irresponsible to simply slap a figure on.
