Drama in Tel Aviv. Apparently Netanyahu along with Smotrich, Ben Gvir are trying to get Gallant out of the government. He is the only one that’s preventing Israel from waging war against Hezbollah. They want to replace him with Gideon Sa’ar who said straight up he will not be part of a government unless there is war plans against Hezbollah. The thinking is Netanyahu might be crazy enough to start a war in the coming weeks.
The reasons are that we are coming to the one year anniversary of the Al Aqsa Flood operation. He may need a distraction because the commemoration will likely lead to widespread protest and anger at the govt for the Israeli failure to detect the raid and failure of the Gaza war.
Another is the weather. Winter is about 3-4 weeks away in that region which means cloudier skies. Israeli ground forces are dependent on close air support. If they do nothing they’ll have to wait until spring 2025 for a military operation. Another reason is because Netanyahu has a court date in December. A war basically postpones the court date.
And lastly a war against Hezbollah would influence the US presidential elections. We have a saying here called “October surprise.” It means a month before the election a scandal or crisis could change the course of the election. Netanyahu wants Trump as president. And he sees how fractured the Democratic coalition is because of Gaza. Starting another war against a muslim Arab nation would be the nail in the coffin for the democrat voters already disgusted with Biden’s policies regarding Gaza. Plus it means a massive regional war where Biden’s loyalty to Israel will force his hand for the US intervene leading to a democratic loss. Netanyahu knows how to make lay the US political game.
