Netanyahu drops key concession in Gaza ceasefire talks

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dropped one of the key concessions in ceasefire negotiations with the Palestinian militant group Hamas, refusing unrestricted access to the northern part of Gaza, CNN reported on Saturday, citing sources.

Now the Israeli PM wants armed individuals to be barred from returning to northern Gaza when the potential ceasefire kicks in. Previously, Israel agreed to allow unrestricted access to the northern part of the enclave, but now it wants the provision reversed for any kind of ceasefire or hostage deal with the group.

The new demand could jeopardize the negotiations, which have been dragging on for months and have so far failed to yield any result.

The development comes as Israel conducted a major airstrike in southern Gaza, with at least 70 killed and nearly 300 injured, according to local health authorities.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed it had targeted the top leadership of Hamas, including the head of its military wing, Mohammed Deif. The militant group disputes the claims, insisting West Jerusalem was merely trying to “cover up” its latest “horrific massacre.”

The conflict in Gaza broke out after the October 7 attack on southern Israel, launched by Hamas, which claimed the lives of around 1,200 Israelis, while more than 200 were taken hostage.

West Jerusalem responded with ground operations and heavy bombardment of the enclave, with the hostility claiming the lives of over 38,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza Health Ministry estimates.

Based on the recent moves in Gaza over the last 1-2 weeks. It seems very unlikely they are going to make any moves against Hezbollah. Given that we haven’t heard of anything outside the usual attacks in the northern region but instead with increased actions in Gaza. It appears their Lebanon plans have been shelved again with the last one in February.

I was not aware that Russia recognizes Jerusalem, instead of Tel Aviv, as the capital of Israel.

[RT article referring to Israel as "West Jerusalem"; I haven't seen that even in Western media]

As you can imagine, another ambush with freedom of movement where there is not a single IDF soldier acting alongside the tank.
The yellow flag on the tank is the flag of Chabad Lubavitch (the Jewish version of the Evangelical doomsday nutters), the same group involved in the Brooklyn tunnel scandal. It's last rabbi, Schneerson was the mentor of Netanyahu. The letters on the flag read: מָשִׁיחַ (messiah).

It seems that the official stance was set in 2017 on the condition of the UN partition resolution in which west Jerusalem is Israel's capital while east Jerusalem is Palestinian's capital.

I think this stance is not very comfortable to Israel though because it requires Israel to accept Palestine as a equal state. It is more like a kicking back the ball tactic that Russia usually play, other examples are "NATO breaks Serbia, then Russia breaks Ukraine and Georgia".

I agree that RT is a bit unnecessary for miss-interpretation. It is more appropriate for RT to use the name of state. On the other hand RT having "west" in the reference can be seen as an indirect saying "east Jerusalem being Palesine", kind of a "I dare you".

Russia, I think, was the first nation to recognize (West) Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. This was at the time of Donald Trump's election, who promised to recognize (West) Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move the Tel Avid embassy there.

The IDF today has openly admitted they have a shortage of tanks and munitions. Given the opposition from the IDF officer class and former IDf officers there likely won’t be a war with Hezbollah. The economy is in tatters. Their soldiers are exhausted and dealing with PTSD. They have achieved no victories. They have no solution for Hezbollah. All they can hope for is a ceasefire until Trump comes to power next year and maybe they can start their war against Hezbollah. However Netanyahu and the IDF are moving into the “third phase” of the Gaza operations. Which is basically occupying the environs of Gaza and launch raids whenever they want. The problem with that is that Hezbollah will not stop their attacks. Nasrallah has stated from the beginning this a war of attrition against Israel. And you are starting to see cracks. Israel cannot sustain these types of losses from now until Trump is in office. That’s another 7 months of this. Their military is exhausted and their economy is on the brink.

Yedioth Ahronoth - The #Israeli army to the Supreme Court:

“During the war, a large number of tanks were damaged, and unfit for combat or training, and it is not expected that new tanks will enter the Armored Corps soon.”

He added, "This means that the current number of tanks is insufficient either for war efforts or for training at the same time.
In addition, the amount of ammunition and resources required to repair the mechanisms are very limited, and the army is working all the time to expand it."

I guess this will put on hold their rush to get themselves offed by Hezbollah. On paper they had more than 1000 tanks, between the active inventory and the older models in storage; if they are running low on tanks, either Hamas is more successful with their IED's and machine milled RPG's AND/OR the Merkava is one overhyped piece of equipment that turns out to be as "good" and reliable as a Chieftain i.e not at fucking all.

I'll have you know that the Chieftan was the very best main battle tank of its era. So long as it broke down in a good firing position.

From what I’ve been seeing the past few weeks is the IDF leaving behind damaged tanks and APCs in various places in Gaza after they withdraw. The majority is from Hamas IED’s and tandem RPG. The moment I saw the IDF using Vietnam war era M113 in Gaza and the border with Lebanon it was a sign they were taking serious attrition.
Gaza has been a death trap for them. An urban warfare nightmare where the enemy can strike at any moment. And there is signs of no letting up from the Gaza resistance fighters as they can mass produce their tandem rpg Yassin 105 and IEDs. As long as they control the tunnels they can sustain this war of attrition on Israel.

The 3rd phase seems to be a tactic to lessen the rate of attrition and politically buys Netanyahu time until Trump get into power so he has full US backing in a regional war.
