Despite above reports of initial Hamas successes, I honestly can't see what they hope to achieve, other than psychological effects.

The balance of forces is just too lopsided. Someone compared this to the Tet Offensive. We should remember that the Viet Cong was crushed in the afterwards retaliation and the US only left Vietnam because it wasn't worth the cost anymore. That is not something Israel is going to do.

The most likely outcome of this is that Hamas will be crushed, its leadership wiped out, and lots of Palestinians will die.
I think the main objective of the offensive is to crush any chance of reconciliation between SA and Israel under the current terms, and they probably succeeded. As for Hamas getting wiped out, wouldn't be more prudent to consider that they thought of this, and had countermeasures in place ?

The West might turn a blind eye at the start, but the thing needed to crush Hamas in this urban jungle is demolishing every building, every tunnel and killing hundreds of thousands of Gazans. A bit different from Vietnam.

Then lose thousands and thousands of troops securing every crater and piece of ruble.
Note that's before we talk about a multi-decade occupation to keep Hamas in check, if they succeed in the initial invasion.

They just don't have the numbers or ammo to hold Gaza for an extended period of time.

And able to meet the 72 virgin in paradise....lol Joking aside what future awaits the Palestinian if they remain passive? They're desperate and some people value Dignity. I'm not advocating this war BUT there is always a limit in Human patience, repeat unfair treatment always result in hardening one's feeling, they will fight back cause they have NOTHING to live for.

Just because you thought of the consequences doesn't mean there's anything you can do to mitigate it. History is full of similar stories.

I don't see how pacifying a tiny urban strip is harder than clearing entire swathes of dense jungle.

Just carpet bomb the whole place and kill everyone. Israel just might be pissed enough to do so.

And not only give your bitter ennemies in the region the best excuse to gang up on you, but also allow your supporters' rivals to destroy them on the internatinal scene and galvanize all the 1.8 billion muslims around the globe, forcing their leaders to act. There's only so much they can do to contain their population, their social media is already boiling and rumbling like a volcano. (another example, what happened in Egypt).

Not even 48 hrs of fighting and regional military superpower has already resorted to begging ...

Israel has turned to the United States with a request for additional military assistance, it may be announced on October 8 - Antony Blinken.

The United States is considering Israel's requests for additional military assistance, and intends to announce it on Sunday. This was stated by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in an interview with CNN.

"We are considering specific additional requests that Israel has sent. I think you will hear news about this today," he said.

Antony Blinken said, that one of the main reasons for the start of the war was the desire of Hamas and Iran behind it to disrupt the normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

“It is possible that part of Hamas' motivation was to interfere with normalization talks with Saudi Arabia along with other countries that are not interested,” Blinken said.

If the statement issued by SA is any indicator, Hamas has succeded in that regard.
