Iraqi forces capture 5 top ISIS leaders in cross-border raid

Iraqi forces in coordination with U.S.-backed Syrian forces have captured five senior Islamic State group leaders, the U.S.-led coalition said Thursday in a statement.

The arrest was a “significant blow to Daesh,” coalition spokesman Army Col. Ryan Dillon said, using the Arabic acronym for the extremist group.

A Pentagon spokesman, Marine Maj. Adrian J.T. Rankine-Galloway, said the U.S. credited Iraqi security forces with the militants’ capture “on the Iraq-Syria border.”

supported Iraqi ground forces and Syrian fighters known as the Syrian Democratic Forces in the more than three-year war against ISIS.

After Iraqi forces retook the Iraqi city of Mosul from IS last summer, Syrian forces on the other side of the border claimed a series of swift victories, but the campaign was stalled recently when Turkey launched a cross-border raid into Syria’s north.

Earlier this month the coalition announced a drive to clear the final pockets of ISIS territory inside Syria.

U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted about the anti-ISIS raid Thursday, saying those arrested were the “five most wanted” ISIS “leaders.” It was unclear what criteria, if any, Trump was using to describe the ISIS operatives as the “five most wanted.”

A U.S. national security official said there were no indications that the operation had captured Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS who has long been the coalition’s top target. The official wasn’t authorized to discuss the targets publicly and requested anonymity.

Last year the Pentagon said that there were “some indicators” that al-Baghdadi was still alive a month after Russia claimed to have killed him in a strike near the Syrian city of Raqqa.

None of the statements released Thursday from the president or the coalition named the ISIS fighters arrested.

ISIS fighters swept into Iraq in the summer of 2014, taking control of nearly a third of the country. At the height of the group’s power their self-proclaimed caliphate stretched from the edges of Aleppo in Syria to just north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Now, with the group’s physical caliphate largely destroyed, anti-ISIS operations are increasingly focused on targeting the extremists’ remaining leadership.

Russia Balks at Arming Syria With Missiles After Netanyahu Talks...

"Russia has no plans currently to deliver advanced S-300 air-defense systems to Syria, President Vladimir Putin’s aide on military cooperation said, an apparent reversal following talks between the Russian leader and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“We’re not discussing any deliveries of advanced new systems” to Syria, Vladimir Kozhin said in comments published on Friday by the pro-government Izvestia newspaper. The Syrian military has “everything it needs,” he said."

Israeli missile destroys Russian anti-aircraft system Pantsir-S1 in Syria . . .

The Israel Defense Force (IDF) released a video in which an Israeli Spike NLOS missile hits a Pantsir-S1 missile defense system, which was sent to Syria by Russia.

The destroyed Pantsir system was at the Mezzeh military airbase (Damascus), which is located 3.8 km from the presidential palace of Bashar Assad.

It was noted that the video was shot from a camera on the missile. When the missile approaches the defense system, the image disappears.

“The IDF struck an SA22 aerial interception system as part of a wide-scale attack against Iranian military sites in Syria,”

According to The Jerusalem Post, this is the first confirmed loss of equipment in Syria.

Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that the Pantsir S-1 anti-aircraft missile system, which the Russian army began using in 2012, “was almost 100% efficient” when defending against the air strike from the U.S. and its allies on targets of the Assad regime in Syria on the night of April 14th.

On the night of May 10th, the Iranian military, operating in Syria, fired dozens of missiles on positions of Israeli military in the Golan Heights. The IDF struck back, attacking dozens of Iranian military facilities in Syria.

I have to agree with this statement:

So here we go again with Israel thinking they can do whatever the Hell they want, and if someone, or some country, doesn’t like it, well, then tough shit. Is it just me, or it’s a Jewish cultural thing whereby they feel they can commit any egregious act, whether on a personal level or at the state level, and the “victim” is only allowed to complain about it? When the victim reacts in retaliation with the same kind of act or force that they did, then we will hear all kinds of propaganda about how Israel was wronged or that their act of aggression was rightful, while the other’s was not. We’ve seen this kind of BS play out over and over again – for at least as long as I can remember. And you know what? That dog ain’t gonna hunt anymore! Virtually every country in the world is sick and tired of Israel’s antics, and if it wasn’t for the US constantly sticking up for them (even when the latter is totally in the wrong) then they would have been censored a long time ago on the world stage.

We will NEVER hear this narrative in American media without being accused as an anti Semite.o_O

1. Syria is still battling against foreign invaders and is still faced with opposition to the government.

2. Without Russian, Iranian and Lebanese help, Syria would have been ripped apart.

3. Post-ISIS, Syria needs to engage in dialogue with rebels (backed by U.S/U.K), and find ways to reconstitute its entire soveriegn territory.

4. Iran cannot, would not jeopardise it's relations with Syria by attacking Israel. Particularly when Syria is still reeling from the civil/terrorist War that it has been fighting for the past 7 years.

5. Iraq is about to hold general elections, where Iran has a chance of seeing a friendly Iraqi government come to power. Attacking Israel at this critical juncture is illogical and irrational.

6. Trump administration's announcement to pull out from the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), is yet another reason why an Iranian attack on Israel from Syrian territory is next to impossible.

To put it simply, there is no rhyme or reason which would indicate Iran attacking Israel from Syrian territory. It is does NOT add up!

7. Fact: the only country in the Middle East that possesses a deployable nuclear arsenal, is Israel. Not Iran, not Syria, not Iraq. And the only country to have carried out attacks against other countries without any provocation, is Israel.

So remind me why the United States of America has not imposed crippling economic sanctions on Israel so far? And why is it that Israel continues to receive $3 billion yearly (for years), despite the Western world having knowledge of Israel possessing nuclear weapons?

What rational explanation allows one Middle Eastern country to be under crippling economic sanctions, DESPITE its full cooperation under JCPOA? And exempt another (Israel) from acquiring full nuclear weapons development and deployment?

Does anyone smell hypocrisy here?

Too bad the video is short, but from what I can see, it seems that the Pansir-S1 was only parked there and I could not see the radar spinning.
