Talk about strange bed fellows. And no surprise Saudi Arabia and Qatar are against foreign intervention in Iraq.

I would not be surprise at all if some shadow sector of the Saudi government is funding ISIS under the table.

Isis and the Saudis are not all buddy buddy.

Saudi Arabia declares Muslim Brotherhood 'terrorist group'
Saudi Arabia has formally designated the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organisation.
An interior ministry statement also classified two jihadist groups fighting with the Syrian rebels - the Nusra Front and the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant - as terrorist groups.
The statement gave Saudis fighting in Syria 15 days to return.
A royal decree issued last month said any citizen found guilty of fighting in conflicts abroad faced a jail sentence.
Hundreds of Saudis are believed to be fighting in Syria, and correspondents say Riyadh fears they could pose a security risk when they return home.
Although the kingdom has supported the Sunni-led rebels fighting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, it has long feared a backlash from radical jihadist groups.
Last month, King Abdullah decreed jail terms of up to 20 years for anyone belonging to "terrorist groups" or fighting abroad.
The interior ministry also said the Saudi branch of the Shia militant movement Hezbollah was now banned.
The new law also promised tough sanctions for anyone backing the incriminated organisations.
However, rights group Amnesty International has criticised the legislation, saying it could be used to suppress peaceful political dissent.
Earlier this week, Saudi Arabia joined the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain in withdrawing its ambassadors from Qatar, which it sees as an important supporter of the Brotherhood.
The Muslim Brotherhood is already banned in Saudi Arabia, which has long viewed its ideology of populist Islam as a threat.
Analysts say the Brotherhood's conservative Sunni doctrines are seen as a challenge to the Saudi principle of dynastic rule.
In Egypt, the Brotherhood has been driven underground since the army deposed President Mohammed Morsi, a longtime member of the group.
The military-backed government in Cairo designated the Brotherhood a terrorist group in December.
Update 13 March 2014: The Shia movement Hezbollah was among the groups banned on 7 March and the story has been updated to include this.
Al-Nusra Front aka Jabhat al-Nusra is the official AQ Branch of Syria and Lebanon. If ISIS or Al-Nusra had it's way they would be doing in the SA what they are doing in Syria and Iraq. They consider the Saudi's Traitors and Blasphemers because of the Close US-SA relationship.

They might not be buddies, but that doesn't mean the Saudis don't think of them as useful tools.

Useful if Double Edged. Unlike The IRGC who can take direct control and command of Hezbollah and Hamas. ISIS can act as a proxy but are more dangerous.

Particularly dangerous for the Saudis when they have decalred to the international community and the world that they have listed ISIS as a terror group and given their own citizens fifteen days to come away and not be involved with them under threas of imprisonment.

I do not think the Saudis will be giving material support, even through back channels, to ISIS.

It is a very complex web of alliances and mutual dependencies :

- First you have petrodollar system - although US and Saudi Arabia have very little in common, with this agreement US protects its economic primacy in the world, and Saudis have powerful ally to protect them .

- Second, you have influential Israeli lobby in US, which makes sure that US always act in accordance to Israel's best interest . Consequently, Arab countries that want good relations with US would not do anything concrete against Israel . That goes even for Saudi Arabia and its proxies - you would notice that Al Qaeda as a rule of thumb avoids attacking Israel .

- Third, there is a old rivalry between "traditionalists" in Gulf monarchies and Arab socialists (Ba'ath Party and similar) . Former are traditionally allied with US , later with Soviet Union (now Russia tries to step in instead) .Saddam's regime in Iraq was toppled because he was at very unfriendly terms with Saudis and of course being an enemy of Israel didn't help :D . It is absolutely clear he didn't have anything to do with 9/11. Same would go for Gaddafi and Assad , possibly even for Mubarak in Egypt .

- Finally, old Sunni vs Shia conflict , with Iran being Shia champion , enemy of Saudis, Israel and of course US . Therefore, although Iran is dubbed Islamic Republic , they tend to ally themselves with secularists and even socialists in Arab world , as we could see from Syria example .

Hezbollah would be much weaker if command over it could be subverted by IRGC. The connection of Hamas with IRGC is decidedly tenuous if it exists at all.

The BBC is suggesting this morning that US want regime change in Baghdad. But what do they want in exchange, and how would they achieve it?
Perhaps they are going back to the neo-con ideas of the '90's, break up Iraq in half a dozen mini-states.
