Re: Indian Army & Navy news thread

Probably India would operate F-18 as land based air bases, most probably to defend its sky on wester and eastern border. Naval use doesn't seems possible in near future before 2015. I'm also researching about which fighter jet may win and think that F-18 has better chance then any other competitor due to its technology as well as political benefits. :)

Nope, Boeing is claiming the F/A-18E/F can handle STOBAR!

Or, maybe the F-35?

The E-2D was looked at for STOBAR as well, but there was no margin for a single engine failure on takeoff (with a C-13 cat the E-2 can survive an engine failure on launch without ditching) and the fuel load for a safe takeoff would not give the E-2 sufficient loiter time to make it worthwhile to purchase.

Hey does anyone have any info or recent pictures of the Indian Navy's upcoming Kolkata class destroyer?

It was launched five years ago and those are the only pics of it I have seen are the empty hull being launched without the sensors etc (their definition of a launch and the chinese one is obviously different). I've searched and such but I can't seem to find any recent pictures of it under construction which gives a good outline of what the final thing would look like.
Help? :D

First flight of Indian AEW in December 2011

a 3 way development with embraer and eads, looks promising, but as usual the problem with India is not mainly on the tech, but the process of inducting and putting the platform to good use

Early next month, India's own AEW&C platform makes its debut flight. The first of three modified EMB-145 platforms will begin a schedule of flights to validate performance and handling. As reported on Livefist earlier, the start-up flight tests will be carried out in Brazil by Embraer and a team from the Indian Air Force's Aircraft & Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) in association with Brazil's Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil and India's CEMILAC.

The first flight test aircraft, scheduled to make its first flight next month (sources say there have been unspecified delays of ), is complete with Dorsal Unit (DoU) containing dummy electronics, ECS, IFR, auxiliary power units, internal fuel tanks, SATCOMs and antennae. India's Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) -- the laboratory spearheading the programme -- supplied Embraer with the dorsal unit (with dummy electronics) and the Ku-band SATCOM dome, while the Defence Avionics Research Establishment (DARE), CABS and the Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL) supplied in antennae for ESM, CSM and U/VHF.

Indian Navy to induct 49 ships over five years, including aircraft carrier and Mig-29

In a major build up of India's naval strength, the Indian Navy will add 49 ships to its fleet strength over the next five years, flag officer commanding-in-chief of the eastern naval command, vice admiral Anil Chopra said Saturday. Addressing a press conference on board INS Shakti, a fleet tanker of the Indian Navy on Saturday, Chopra said that the navy presently had 132 ships, including 14 submarines.

"49 ships and submarines, which are under construction, would be inducted in the next five years. Out of these, 45 are being built indigenously at the Indian shipyards, while four are being built outside India," Chopra said.

Some of the ships that to be inducted include the aircraft carrier Vikramaditya, which is being refitted in Russia. It would be stationed on the western seaboard in Mumbai.

Another aircraft carrier, designated the Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC), being built at the Kochi shipyard, is likely to be stationed on the eastern seaboard with the eastern naval command here, he said.

"Other ships to be inducted include, three Shivalik class stealth frigates, four Kamorta class ASW corvettes, three Kolkata class project 15A, four project 15B ships, seven project 17A ships, three follow on 1135.6 ships, nine offshore patrol vessels, two cadet training ships," he said.

Apart from these, six catamaran survey ships and 95 fast interceptor crafts would also be inducted, vice adm Chopra added.

On the aviation side, the navy plans to induct multi-role helicopter, naval utility helicopter, MiG-29K fighter aircraft, Boeing P-8I long-range maritime patrol ASW aircraft, medium-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, in addition to mid-life upgrade plans for Sea Kings and Ka-28 helicopters, he said.

The vice admiral said that apart from its primary role as a defence force, the navy is also playing diplomatic, constabulary and humanitarian roles.

"As part of diplomatic role, the Indian navy has been conducting joint naval exercises regularly with countries like Sri Lanka, Singapre, the UK and the USA, among others. The Indo-US Malabar exercise will be held in the Bay of Bengal next year," the vice admiral said.

That is how much, in US$?

around $10 bil, a classical throw money at the problem attempt at solution

other snippets about MKI :

MKI production rate is 16 aircrafts per year
HAL still relies on Russian kits

googling about Indian Dhruv (i remember that it's doing pretty well on sales) found these on wiki :

Very rough estimates give the PLAAF and PLAN something on the order of 750+ 4th generation fighter and attack aircraft consisting of SU-27s, SU-30s, J11s, J10s, J15s (very small number), and JH-7s. India has something on the order of 680+ 4th generation fighter and attack aircraft consisting of SU-30s, Mig-29s, Mirage 2000s, Jaguars and Mig-27s (thought the 100 Mig-27s are a stretch to call them 4th gen).
