Reports on the incident seems to suggest that the pirates only engaged the INS Kolkata destroyer, some 60 year old HAL Chetak choppers providing surveillance, and a drone (which they shot down). The Indian Navy retaliated solely with warning shots and the 40 hour long standoff pretty much ended with no casualties on either side. Additional MARCOS members where only paradropped later on to assist the existing force following the pirates surrender, so it wasn't a airborne insertion of any sortImpressive. Did the pirates surrender due to the threat of being fired upon by the destroyers should they engage the paratroopers though?
If that's the case, then it would signify that the Indian special forces are competent at airborne and insertion operations at par with any other country fielding such troops but it says nothing of their combat/direct action capabilities. Overall, this operation boils down to search, board and seizure albeit with a bit more flair.
