What is a "combat engineer unit?" I don't understand the term. How is it a combat unit if they weren't armed? Like I said, India ambushed a team of unarmed construction workers with no reason to believe they would be attacked or they would not have been unguarded/unprepared to fight.

Combat engineers are what the engineering corps of most militaries are called. They are trained to fight if needed, but their primary function is battlefield construction and repairs.

As for not being armed, well they were on a routine road building mission inside Chinese territory. There was no reason for them to need to be armed. Are any of the PLA soldiers who participate in disaster relief operations inside China armed?

Also, it is a little inaccurate to say they were attacked. Had the Indias really attacked an unarmed PLA combat engineer unit inside Chinese territory on a road building mission, all possibly of diplomaticy would have ended there and then.

The Indians went in to physically block the path of the Chinese road building crew with human chain tactics, and they went in armed and in force to make it a very poor choice for those unarmed PLA combat engineers to try to stop them entering Chinese territory by force.

If the PLA had anticipated the reaction, there is no way India could have gotten an inch of progress. Those 300 fellas would have climbed up a hill to 1,000 armed troops with combat vehicles and they'd be left with the, "Oh, is this Bhutan? We took a wrong turn, sorry." And left LOL

The boarder region is remote, hard to access (why China is building the road and partly why India is so insecure about it) and hard to police.

The Indians knew about the Chinese road building because China told them in advance. But otherwise, short of having drones flying right up to the boarder 24/7, and deploying troops to actively shadow all Indian detachments close to the boarder, it will be near impossible to have the right number of men at the precisely the right place at the right time to stop Indian troops incursing into Chinese territory, and vice versa.

You just cannot do what you are suggesting without wasting a stupid amount of resources. Which is why China has been keen to resolve its boarder disputes peacefully.

let me see what I got ...

LOL not sure how to quote the German expression from the above post so that somebody doesn't quote it as "Jura said ..."

OK now my position, as I said Yesterday at 9:01 PM
if I see a CCTV News report from a resumed road-building, the winner will be obvious

Here what Chinese foreign ministry had to say about the subject. Clearly they didn't say they will stop road construction They may temporarily halt the construction due to approaching winter

China's border troops to continue to patrol Doklam: FM
Source:Global Times Published: 2017/8/29 17:05:34

China said on Tuesday that its infrastructure plans in the Doklam area will be based on actual conditions and Chinese border troops will continue to patrol the area.

"Conditions such as weather would determine China's infrastructure plan in the Doklam area," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said at a press conference on Tuesday.

"To meet the needs and improve the working and living conditions of the local army and residents, China has been working on a long-term infrastructure plan in Doklam, such as building roads," Hua said.

China announced that India had pulled back its troops and equipment to the Indian side of the boundary, and that Chinese border troops will continue to patrol the Doklam area, Hua noted.

On June 18, more than 270 Indian troops and two bulldozers crossed the boundary in the Sikkim sector and advanced more than 100 meters into Chinese territory to obstruct routine road construction in the Dong Lang area of the Tibet Autonomous Region, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

Doklam, or Dong Lang, which borders India's Sikkim state to the west and Bhutan to the south, is part of Chinese territory and has been under Chinese rule for a very long time.

The thing to look out for is the arrival of a Bhutan ambassador in Beijing probably next year. That is more important than that road.
That road is one of the keys to economic growth both China and Bhutan to benefit. Ambassador's and diplomats can come visit Beijing anytime to discuss about anything, but economic stability can only "wait" for so long, especially for those that needed it most.

- from which I quote the last paragraph:
The answer is not yet known at least not by this author. However, a well-placed Indian source with close ties to the Indian military forces noted to me in a recent private correspondence that shortly following Trump’s election in November last year, a senior US intelligence adviser to the Trump circles stated bluntly that there would not be a war between USA and China, but rather there would be a war between India and China across the Himalayas. That was in November at a time Doklam was completely quiet.
If China was aware of this it is no wonder that the road builders were not provided with an armed escort.

Construction on that particular road will resume once the area is secured.

I really hope so. And resumed sooner rather than later. Loudly in front on India's face. Gotta rub it in so their trolls can shut their mouths for once.
(LOL)

if building of the road doesn't resume ASAP, it might mean now it's like time-out:
Mr. Xi wanted the I in his B R I C S meeting next week, and Indians don't want the road, so both sides will wait until next Summer;
do you know what I'm saying?

Did you even bother to read my post the road is not an issue here Indian trespassing in to Chinese territory is

Before the Indian insists on mutual withdrawal The Chinese say no . You are the one that is the squatter move your butt which they did

The road can be built next year this time around with heavy guard so that is not an issue. It is only one of the many that will be built to border area In fact China expedite the plan to build more road to the border. Over at CDF Pierre Le fout who is longtime forummer now in China said his friend with the Chinese railway told him that China temporarily suspend construction to give face to India but they plan to built railway to Bhutan as soon as they clear the border dispute with Bhutan So instead of road railway which is better to facilitate connection with Bhutan and wean Bhutan from India just like Nepal

You just parroting Indian argument to cover their shame having to eat their word and capitulated! and scamper back to their side of border

8/20 China Tibet AR

The Department of Transportation of Tibet Autonomous Region has announced today that it plans to start 30 new road construction projects in border areas this year. The construction of two of these new roads is already underway, and the rest are in various stages of surveying and designing. In addition, the construction of 5 extension projects to existing roads has also restarted.

...
well the road has been an issue for the Indians, and they basically did all they could to prevent China from building it; what matters is if they succeeded or not, I guess

(note I of course don't know if China will, or won't, resume Doklam road-building, that's why I come here, because a vid showing such activity would be posted very quickly with

Let's all be honest here, India can claim victory and China can claim victory also. India obtain the objective by stopping China from continuing building the road for now and can convey its security concern. China can claim victory by standing up to the principle there is no withdrawal if India did not withdraw first. Although China can still build the road after India withdraw the troops but at that time of course with armed forces guarding the road workers.

The area is a disputed territory so a little bit of quarrels is not really that much as long as it is resolved peacefully, even brothers or sisters or husband and wife quarrels once a while.

But overall, IMHO, India blink first because there is really no global support for what India doing, almost all comments are neutral and India withdraw its soldiers first before China withdraw its soldiers in a disputed area.
