HJ-8 versus Shilka.

Same attack but from a different angle.

Good shot, but seems like a waste when an RPG would probably have done the job. Its also interesting that the rebels are going after air defence assets. Maybe they are getting orders from their western handlers to soften up Assad's AD network in preparation for an US strike?

More likely rebels were going after easy targets of opportunities, and the Shilka was low hanging fruit de jure.

Well using ATGM, you can engage your target from a safer distance on an open field. On the shilka, I think the army is using it as an heavy machine gun giving fire support

A Triple A asset like a Quad MG Shilka can be used as a anti personal/ light vehicle weapon. It's 23mm cannons can be elevated to engage targets on hillsides the only "safe zone" is level with the hull. so using a ATGM makes sense.

If HJ8 missiles grew on trees, by all means, hit anything you want with them. I was just wondering if it was wise to expend one of a finite and likely limited supply of heavy anti tank missiles on a lightly armoured AAA gun that could have just as easily been taken out by an RPG round, which are far easier to come by.

when you consider the power of four 23mm cannons and what they could do to the poor sob who misses his first shot with said Rpg its not a waste. That thing would chew though infantry like a a meat grinder. Far wiser to stand of slam it with a guided weapon then risk being turned into pink mist.
Even with a Atgm its not a wise idea to try and take on a modern tank.

those guys made the right call wolf. A RPG might disable a Zsu then again it might miss or the round could be a dud or the vehicles crew spot him and turn those guns his way. The guided missile was a virtually assured kill on that thing. In combat there is no such thing as over kill.

M99 anti-material rifles have been used in Syria since last year.

Those videos piss me off...

The decision to kill a tank has nothing to do with god.

And to deploy the ATGM on a friggin mound in the middle of an open hillside plain is insane.... no matter what distance.

They were fired upon before they returned fire. Is that a tank or artillery shell whishing over them?
