H-20 bomber (with H-X, JH-XX)

Re: PLAAF new JH-XX / H-X bomber soncepts

I recognize with resignation that H-20 might be drawn out over many months, perhaps even a year, if they decide to release photos of it before service entry at all!

I'm not even sure any clear pics will be revealed at all. It's one thing with the j31 j20, u could argue j31 is for export purposes and that j20 can be used for defence so those photos are okayed by higher ups, but a pure stealth bomber is 100% offensive weapon. Could agitate the noisy neighbours and I'm not sure the Chinese leadership want to be too showy

The only thing I can think of is to pacify some sections of the population but that is another story

Agreed with Your arguments but I want to add one simple additional one: That damn thing might simply be too large to hide !

DoD might start releasing reports if the H-18 is big enough to approach "strategic", to try to get the sequester millstone off their neck.

But they are letting people know the existence of it by showing a fuzzy photo. So the noisy neighbors would already be agitated if they want to be, knowing that China now has a stealth bomber in development. Why not giving people the clear photo later on? If they want to keep it a secret, they would keep a tight lid on it and not letting anything out. We know they can do it. We haven't had any new pics of J-20 for sometime now...

Does the PLAAF really need a stealth deep-strike fighter? I would think the combination of H-6K + Type-095 SSGN would be provide enough deep-strike + stealth capabilities via LACMs for China in the foreseeable future. Thoughts?

Bomber*. Absolutely need? Not in the near term. However, having one would vastly expand their offensive capabilities. A stealthy supersonic bomber would expand the number and versatility of strike options. A stealthy aerial platform is both quicker and less restricted than either the H-6K or an attack sub. It would allow the PLA to hit smaller and more mobile targets deeper in enemy territory than a submarine, while having a greater chance of mission success and survivability than the H-6K.

Yes they do -- or at least, if they can afford it, they should buy it.
H-6K can carry cruise missiles and reach distant targets, but it isn't stealthy and can be easily intercepted or at least an adversary can intercept the cruise missiles.
SSNs are a potent weapon, but China doesn't have an SSGN that can carry many dozens of LACMs, nor do we know how quiet they are. Further it will be difficult to travel within range of a target to reduce detection time of its cruise missiles even if they do have 2000km range.

A stealthy supersonic bomber can do all of the above while being more survivable, flexible, and with less warning for the enemy's defences to respond. In particular, it would also be able to strike at highly defended naval formations at long distance and come out alive, which at this point only a handful of PLA weapons can do (SSKs and DF-21D).

It all depends on how high we want the PLAAF to aim. And in this case, they are aiming quite high indeed.

PUPU传递出的消息是:远轰是存在的;远轰原来是601干现在其他所干;远轰还在预研阶段;远轰不是轰-18。
What Pupu indicated is:
1. Long-leg bomber does exist.
2. It was responsible by 601 and is transferred to others.
3. Long-leg bomber is still in the study stage.
4. It is not H-18.
