The FREMM Normandie returned to port on Saturday 8 March on the DCNS site in Lorient, at the end of its third series of sea trials. This frigate is the second of the series ordered by the French DGA (General Directorate for Armament) for the French Navy. OCCAR is the contracting agency for the FREMM program on behalf of France and Italy.

The latest images of FREMM Normandie sea trials released by DCNS show for the first time the Narwhal Remote Weapon System installed on a French Navy FREMM. Building on its experience gained with light naval mounts for small craft (15A/15B) and with technologies implemented for turreted canon for helicopters, Nexter Systems developed the remote-controlled naval gun mount known as Narwhal in the 20mm configuration.

IMHO, the FREMMs are about the best frigate design on planet earth right now.

Beautiful... Apart from the friggin duck bill bows. Every time I see one I imagine Donald Duck and I can't take the otherwise excellent looking and formidable ships seriously

Well, they almost count as destroyers at 6,000 tons (and certainly should if they were more heavily armed).
Well, as a frigate they have a very decent multi-role armamnet:

16 x Sylver A43 VLS Cells for Aster 15 AAW missiles
16 x Sylver A70 VLS Cells for SCALP land attack cruise missiles
08 x Exocet MM-40 block 3 surface to surface missiles
01 x Otobreda 76 mm DP main gun
06 x MU90 torpedo tubes
01 x NH90 Helicopter (pad and hanger)

Now, it would be nice if they had a more versatile VLS System so that any of those 32 cells could accomodate either Aster 15, Aster 30, or surface to surface missiles. As it is they are constrained to 16 of each, and the AAW missiles are restricted to Aster 15. Just the same, they have a very decent sensor suite and a very respectable mulit-role armament.

Twpo things.

1) The bow form, though not as sharp as others, does perform a function for the vesse'ls operations in partcular sea states.

2) Hehehe...if you are prone to not take them seriously, remember the decent weapons fit and sensor suite they have. One on one, they would be a serious threat to almost any other FFG or DDG surface combatant.
