YO!! @tonyget how come the Americans seem intimated enough to cancel their test but you on the other hand with your infinite military acumen, wisdom, and bravery seem unimpressed. Tell us again what's your military background?

The goal was to deterrent Pelosi from visiting Taiwan, apparently the threat from China prior to the visit failed to achieve that goal.

Again, please do explain the plans you concocted in your head that would have deterred Pelosi's determined visit to Taiwan? And explain why it would or could have worked while fully anticipating any drawbacks, reaction from the usual suspects.

We can't simply say if only this and that were done then it would have worked blah blah...

It would be a nice intellectual read to actually read an opinion backed by some actual deliberate thought because we could at least understand the rationale, thought process behind such an opinion rather than making declarative statements or cynical criticism and reasoned out with one or two words sentence.

In 2017,North Korea launched missile flying over Japan to hit Pacific Ocean. What's the big deal ? I doubt the Japanese felt much pressure from it.

Militarily it is a big deal because you're dead.

If we fly a jet over a ship, it means the jet is saying, "I am going to kill you!" to the ship.

As long as it is a warning, no one gets killed. If not, they are to be taken off the board.

After reading through all of the responses in this thread, I think it's safe to say that most people here agreed with Xi's decision on not shooting down Pelosi's plan and instead going for long-term strategic goals like with the military exercises happening right now.

China's long-term strategic goal is to liberate Taiwan and break all 3 island chains. In order to this, China needs at least 1(maybe 2 for caution) nuclear-powered aircraft carrier(s), which is going to take at least a decade or maybe even longer.

This brings into question of how long Xi stays in power. If Xi wants his legacy to be reunifying Taiwan and breaking the 1st island chain, then Xi just needs 1 more term and can pass on the role of breaking the other two island chains to his future descendants. However, if Xi wants his legacy to be reunifying Taiwan and breaking all 3 island chains, Xi is going to need at least 2 more terms possibly even 3 more terms.

I know people will be fine with Xi getting a 3rd term but would people be fine with Xi getting a 4th or be even 5th term?

Not shooting down the plane is good decision. However the fire and destruction warning was extremely detrimental.

If they manage to normalize exercises this close to Taiwan without too much uproar, then the warnings will be hailed as a genius-level execution of expectations management. If not, well….

Actually, idk what they’ll do. I do hope they l overhaul the way they handle foreign relations and their PR folks, but they might also not.

Yes, this is the key. Normalization of military exercises so close to Taiwanese airspace and territorial waters must continue, how often does China get to "flip-out" and get a virtual "free-pass" by international community since they can see it's US that was the shit-stirrer? Not often! Taiwan is the ultimately loser in this scenario.
