Yes, the scriptwriters have failed, and the Chinese player has performed masterfully.
The Anglo-Imperial scriptwriters are so convinced of their power to manipulate the perception of reality that they forced the script too much. And now by piling lies on top of lies they want to sell us (in the Western mental kindergarten) plan B: this provocation was an old lady's idea.
What China likely exploited is the sheer need of the America to have a victory to rally around, since they got slapped around so much recently.
There was simply no way the US propagandists and therefore the public wouldn't massively overreact and bring America into the trap.
As far as I see it and based on the type of words used by the Chinese government, I'd even say there were plans that went way further. Perhaps, the original intention is to provoke USA to defend their "win" by sending the Reagan and 2 LHAs to stop Beijing from entering Taiwan self proclaimed territory.
Then, China would simply sink the Reagan and every US ship around it, then launch armed reunification. The international community would see it as America being exceptionally greedy and aggressive, sending a CV to Taiwan straits after "humiliating" China already with Pelosi, and therefore US will bear most of the blame for this quick war.
In short, the same playbook as the 1962 war. Get the opponent riled up and make him believe he's stacking wins after wins, then shatter them in 1 blow under the pretext of self defense.
But US realized at some point, so the shocking change across all US news outlets now being neutral, negative or blaming Pelosi as an individual, which strongly suggests the change of tone was centrally directed and done at emergency speed. And Reagan is explicitly heading East to show that US isn't gonna play right into China's hands.
