Most people don't know the details of how strong various militaries are. They only know about recent wars. The Soviet Union was respected because of the second world war and Russia has inherited that respect. But they clearly don't deserve it. Vietnam earned respect through its successful defence against France and the US, but it wouldn't be very accurate to describe Vietnam's armed forces today as particularly powerful in the region. Reputation like this can be powerful, but it's only based on history, not today's facts. And you can only change it by fighting a war. Let's hope China won't need to fight a war to conquer Taiwan
Clearly Russia's military prowess is respected. And the Russians clearly DO deserve it: how many NATO troops are officially fighting Russia in Ukraine? As far as I know, none whatsoever.

China has already fought the US in the Korean War, and probably considers it unnecessary to fight the hegemon again. It's to China's great geopolitical advantage to be seen as a purely defensive power, as a power that does not assault its neighboring countries. (Taiwan is not a country.) In the long run, a pure defensive posture is a winning strategy for the Middle Kingdom.

I oppose taking those islands for a much simpler reason: Pelosi's visit will hardly be the last of its kind. There will be other provocations as the decade grinds on and China should leave something in the bank to respond to them.
Even if islands aren't taken now that Pelosi has landed it has given the green light for Europeans to do the same.

What's worse, the soon to be chosen leader of the UK, this guy:

British Indian, the worst of both worlds.

He will announce an unofficial visit to Taiwan. As soon as he gets off the plane he will unbutton his trousers and defecate next to the runway. Are you okay with that...

The main island is that something.
There will be no or there will be much less provocations if China reclaims minor islands as a consequence of Pelosi visit.

You should take a closer look at the projections if you think Sunak is going to win.

Edit: Didn't see the last part

Polls are all over the place and unreliable. One poll shows a 34 point lead for Truss. Another poll shows a 5 point lead for Truss. That was within the last week.

For all the talk about paper tigers, here is a real one in its natural environment
Well what do you know. For all the doom and gloom on this thread it looks like the people that matter are expecting a military response.

I wonder if it's been decided to allow Pelosi and the Americans to leave before the start of military action.
