re: F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Thread

Although I think all of us would still like too see more Raptors, there internal load was far superior in terms of numbers.

Everything about the Raptor is superior, with the exception of the electronics, and as archaic as they are, they are much more difficult to hack, so better in my opinion. Brat

I do not think the Raptor would prove to be as good a close ground support aircraft as the JSF will be. The JSF is designed for that principally, with air to air as a second requirement.

The Raptor was built to own the skies.

the Raptor is indeed a advanced piece of kit but it does not compare with JSF, the F22 has 2.2 million lines of code writen in its software the current F35 has 9.6 million lines of code, later blocks will have in excess of >15 million, F35 is on a new level in terms of sophistication, everything is computer controlled everything is done by computer

First Kongsberg Joint Strike Missile (JSM) fitted on the F-35
px6Qilf.jpg

Development of the new Joint Strike Missile (JSM, the air launched variant of the NSM - Naval Strike Missile) is progressing, and 27 February an important milestone was passed when the aircraft manufacturer Lockheed Martin for the first time fitted one of the missiles to a F-35 at its facility in Ft Worth, Texas.

This formed part of a "fit check" of the JSM on an external pylon on the F-35 and is part of Phase 2 of the development of the JSM missile that was approved by the Norwegian Parliament in 2011. The fit check confirms that the missile is able to be fitted for external carriage on the F-35, and will be followed later in 2013 by similar tests aimed at verifying that the missile fits within the internal weapons bay of the F-35.
...
JSM is the only long-range anti-surface missile that is specifically designed to fit within the internal weapons bay of the F-35, and is being developed by the Norwegian company Kongsberg in partnership with the Norwegian Ministry of Defence. The missile provides the F-35 with operational characteristics, and enables it to fight the objects protected by advanced defense systems. This is vital in order to be able to perform all types of operations in the defense of Norway. JSM is scheduled to undergo a "Critical Design Review" in summer 2013, which will confirm that the design is sufficiently mature to be able to continue the integration efforts and that the missile is able to be a formal candidate for integration on the F-35.

This is great news.

The Joint Strike Missile is an upgrade and imporvement over the Naval Strike Missile that Norway produced.

The Joint Strike Missile carriers the same weight warhead (125 kg) but has a couple of key improvements.

1st, as an air launched missile, it's range will improve out to 280 km. This is significant in terms of reach for the F-35, either from an airfield or a carrier.

2nd, the JSM employs a two-way communication capabilitiy to allow the missile to send data back to the platform, surveillance aircraft, or command centers on land or at sea, so that BDA can be done and missiles can be re-tasked. Very significant force multiplier and enhanced functionality capability.

Glad to see this level of fit coming along.

F-35 fighter forced to land in Texas en route to Nevada air base

(Reuters) - One of two F-35 fighter jets headed to a Nevada air base made an unscheduled landing in Lubbock, Texas on Monday after a caution light came on in the cockpit, according to a Pentagon spokesman and the plane's manufacturer, Lockheed Martin Corp.

The next-generation stealth fighter was flying from the Lockheed plant in Fort Worth, Texas to Nellis Air Force Base near Las Vegas on Monday afternoon, when a caution warning light came on, requiring the pilot to land at the nearest airport, said Lockheed spokesman Michael Rein.

He said the pilot landed safely. The second plane landed as planned at the Nevada air base, joining two other aircraft that arrived there last week, where they will be used for operational testing and evaluation of the new warplane.

A team of Lockheed maintenance experts was en route to examine the single-engine plane at the Lubbock airport, which is about 300 miles from Fort Worth, Rein said. It was not yet clear what caused the caution light to come on, he said.

The incident is the latest in a string of negative news about the new single-seat, single-engine warplane that Lockheed is developing for the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps, and eight international partners: Britain, Canada, Australia, Italy, Turkey, Norway, Denmark, and the Netherlands.

The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the Pentagon's most expensive weapons program, has been grounded twice this year already for engine-related issues.

Joe DellaVedova, spokesman for the Pentagon's $396 billion F-35 program, confirmed the plane had landed in Lubbock after a warning light came on, but said he had no further details about the incident.

Rein said it was not immediately known if the warning light was triggered by a problem with the engine, which is built by Pratt & Whitney, a unit of United Technologies Corp.

He said local police were securing the state-of-the-art warplane at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport, which handles operations by three airlines and several cargo carriers.

Rein said the plane would continue its journey to Nellis Air Force Base, or return to the Lockheed plant, depending on what the mechanics discovered when they examined the plane.

Gary Loftus, airport operations manager at the Lubbock airport, told Reuters the F-35 fighter was parked on an airport ramp and was protected within a fence. "Nobody can get to the airplane," he said.

He said he believed it was the first time an F-35 fighter had landed at the commercial airport.

The congressional Government Accountability Office on Monday released its annual report on the weapons program, saying it was showing progress in development, production and technical issues but still faced tremendous challenges.

congress is fighting over the funding of the F-35, and bad news keeps coming in. I think not everything in the F-35 program is going to survive, the most likely part might be dropped could be the C.

Nah!, the Navy wants the C, it is the airplane tailored for carrier ops, and the F-18, even the SHornet won't be happy operating in highly contested airspace, the C is coming along nicely and is only the last of the brood because the SHornet is still viable, the F-16 is tired and the Harrier is about exhausted, the Marines taking the rest of the Brits retired Harriers for spares. AFB

However, for some of our more liberal friends in the administration and congress, one dime for defense rather than social programs is too much and the F-35 is presently bore-sighted, and BHO is INTENT on punishing the military in this Fiasco of his own imagination because the Republicans let sequestration happen rather than cave in to BIG tax hikes???? He knows the quickest way to hurt republicans is to "hurt" the military, and yes the F-35 is in peril, maybe mortal peril, but we shall see???? Remember when all the Carriers were lined up over the holidays, I predicted cuts there, and--------???? AFB

JSM has been check fitted on the F-35's external station. This is the only anti-ship missile currently designed for internal carriage in F-35:

- Although we are still far away from any operational use of the JSM this shows that the development of the missile is moving forward. As part of Phase 2 of the development program Lockheed Martin has received through the JSF Program Office that includes a requirement for such tests on all variants of the F-35, as well as conducting internal fit checks in the weapons bay of the CTOL version that Norway will buy, explains Norwegian F-35 Program Director Anders Melheim.

- We are working hard to ensure that Norwegian F-35s receive the operational capabilities we need, and therefore we believe that JSM is very important. At the same time it provides significant opportunities for Norwegian industry, and it is an important part of the industrial cooperation we are working to put in place in relation with the procurement of new combat aircraft, concludes Melheim.

I think in A to A combat;) I still pin my chances on a Raptor anyday or night over the Lighting despite it having more 'lines of codes' than the Raptor. :)
