Very Kool, the B models remain grounded waiting for mods to the fueldraulic actuator sytem on the nozzles! AF-4 has been flown to 73 degrees AOA and recovered, they have intentionally departed the aircraft, and now they will begin departing her with the stability aug off, spinning and then switching the system on and allowing it to recover the aircraft. Pilot notes that in order to achieve 73 degrees, that is 100kts indicated airspeed at 40,000 ft, yee hah! ride em cowboy!. AF-4 still has her SRC, they will do all the tests, then remove the SRC and do them all again! WOW! AFB The C model may be losing her spoilers, and adding additional flap to get her down to 145kts to recover to the carrier? Oh well, all in a days work? Brat

How many escape hatches do you see on the KC-`130, yes, my Dad did stick my head through one while holding me up, so I could see the top of the airplane, but I wasn't very old, not sure I liked that, but I well remember it, loved the flight deck, esp the left seat. LOL Brat

Spoilers are likely those green slats aft of the leading edge on the closer C model? Brat

Flying with 73 degrees AoA. Under normal operating conditions it will be restricted to 50 degrees.

Pretty birds, and they are working them hard. Progress being made on all fronts. This is the kind of stuff dreamed of for years, a supersonic capable stealth warbird, serving all three services with each having its unique qualities yet retaining a high degree of commonality for logistical, maintenance, and other cost savings. Air defence/superiority, ground pounding, STOVL, Cat launch and arrested recovery...and all the neat electronic toys.

My, my my. When she truly gets out of the chute and onto the market I believe she will approach the F-16 in terms of her proliferation over the next 20 years...and probably until long after you and I are over yonder, ore Jordan with our mortal remains busy pushing up daisies! LOL!

Dutch radio news said a few minutes ago that the main foreign affairs think tank, Instituut Clingendael, has investigated four scenario's for the Dutch armed forces and concludes from those that the F-35 is useless to The Netherlands. A few days ago there was news that the two test aircraft bought by the Dutch will be twice as expensive than expected so, also in view of the financial troubles of the Netherlands, there will be increased pressure not to buy these aircraft.

The Dutch have to decide what they are going to do in light of their economy and costs.

I believe the F-35 is going to end up being a fine aircraft all around. The costs are already coming down (as reported earlier in this thread) but still more expensive than originally projected. But they will continue to come down as more aircraft are built and projecting the current trends forward shows that by 2017, they will be near the cost for a brand new, completely upgraded F-16. That will still be more than the original projection, but the F-16 price has also risen, and the target was to get as close to that price point as possible...meaning providing a new F-35 for very close to the same price as a fully upgraded and modernized, latest Block F-16 would cost.

I wish the Dutch luck. I am sure they will provide for their needs within their own budget constraints. I hope the time never comes when they wish they had stuck with it, waited it out, and gotten these aircraft at the price they will be availabe for once full production starts.

My Dutch center-right newspaper describes the situation in its editorial today as: The new government has decided to look at the JSF again but now this think tank has done most of this work for them - we can buy a reasonable number of F-35's, but then we can't also pay for a useful army and navy.
I wonder how much this will be different for other countries that are expected to buy the F-35. A financial commentator said there is now a new collection of countries that should be watched: FISH, France, Italy, Spain, Holland. I would be surprised if the Italians get to use the F-35.

Spain and Italy are going to need some of the "B" model for their carriers Cavour and Juan Carlos, if they want an airwing. There is no other future option for them. But we shall see.

The Air Force is going to send 4 A Models to Nellis, to play with the big boys, we shall see how she does against both the fourth gens and soon the F-22, my money is all on the Raptor, LOL. It will be the first serious flying and I'm quite sure they will go relatively slow, but not as slow a the Lioaning? So it will be interesting to see just how much we learn, I'm sure we will get some anecdotal info in 6 mos or so? Brat
