22 April

ITALY
Local paper reports the government decided to halve procurement of F-35 fighters, from 90 to 45.
(rmks: unclear to what extent carrier-borne F-35B could be affected)
As expected.

As expected.
It's a local paper reporting this?

Seems to me if the decision was made, it would be a much more widely and officially announced.

I will wait for that announcement before believing it is final.

As I said earlier...best to wait until we hear something official from the Italian. As it is, Lockheed, on April 24th, refuted the unofficial "reports."

Defense World said:
Lockheed Martin today reaffirmed that its F-35 fighters contract with the Italian government stood at 90 aircraft.

Defenseworld.net had earlier reported based on local reports Italian media that the order had been pared down to 45 aircraft.

A Lockheed Martin spokesperson said in a statement, “While there have been a lot of reports in the press, Italy’s program of record remains at 90 F-35s. The first four Italian jets are in assembly in Fort Worth, Texas and Cameri, Italy, where there is a final assembly and check-out facility.”

The statement also said, “Italy is a valued partner on the F-35 program. Since the program’s inception, all partner countries as sovereign nations, periodically review their security and defense needs. We understand and respect this decision-making process”.

So, until we hear something official from the Italian government...we can only wait.

If they do cut it like this...then they will be risking future business and orders that go through the F-35 Final Assembly and Check Out (FACO) facility in Cameri, in Northern Italy, which they have already spent a fortune on, and which they were counting on using to make significant profits for Italy.

If they reduce their orders too much, other nations who are also strong partners in the program, will cry foul, and understandably so because those nations will undoubtedly raise a significant stink about workshare.

Local newspaper La Repubblica reported this. I don't know Italian, but it looks like they say plan to cut F-35 order is "secret", so nothing official yet :
