F-22 Raptor Thread

Amazing isn't it, that the deployment of four F-22s to Europe is news, and its news for one reason only, those four aircraft are "game changers" in and of themselves. Wait till the F-35s do a couple of overseas visits, that will be news as well, because a real fifth gen is a "force" that the other team "cannot" counter with conventional means.

Hence Master Jura's theorem of launching AAMs en mass to disrupt those sensors??? it might work??? who knows, but it is a wild-card????

Good in theory but four aicraft can be overwhelmed rather easy with superior numbers of older machines not better just more of them that was Germany's problem in the second world war numbers out paced superior technology and that is what I've been saying all along

I think there is deep unappreciation of how stealth changes the whole dynamics of the battlespace and the multiplier effect it brings versus legacy aircraft. This example is based on real conflict scenarios and not opinions and that was just using F-117's.

In other words, the 20 F-117's were equivalent to 240 legacy aircrafts.

Brumby maybe you can answer this unrelated why was the 117 with drawn after so few years and it's just a question

Because as effective as that first gen stealth is/was, the poor little "wobbling gobblin" was shaped for maximum concealment, but that very shaping was indeed at the expense of aerodynamic performance. It was a fighter bomber if that makes you happy, but had no real defensive capability in A2A combat other than good sensors and stealth.

The F-22 and F-35 are very effective stealth aircraft, with equally effective aerodynamics, that allow them to be flown to the limits with relative ease, very high lift, and able to fly to and through very high alpha maneuvering with tremendous departure resistance. This gives them very fine A2A as well as A2G performance. The fifth generation paradigm is that this aircraft will remain well out of the reach of its adversary due to its stealthy posture and extremely sensitive sensors allow first look, first shoot capability.

The issue of the F-117 supposedly premature retirement was extensively discussed only very recently. I can't remember on which thread the discussions took place. If anyone that can remember the thread, please point it out.

In short, B787 took the position as a rebuttal that if the F-117 was so effective during Operation Desert Storm, why did the US retired the plane. He than pointed out the F-117 shot down over Serbia as an added reasoning that stealth was not as great as advertised. If I remember correctly a number of posters addressed this question including TE who gave a rather substantive background and history on the F-117 leading to its retirement.
As AFB pointed out, the F-22 came along and was a much more capable platform in so many ways to the F-117 that its retirement became rather inconsequential. If my understanding of the F-117 is correct, its sensors and electronics were so basic that it did not even have a radar.

Not four Raptors Bub, you really need to read Master Brumby's post again, you are missing the force multiplier factor. You should also realize we have had these in the combat zone for over a year, everybody who counts knows what they will do!
F-22 Raptor, Groovy BABY!
