I don't know about the radars, I heard they now have PL-8 missiles

If I am correct, the JL-7A radars which the AFZ planes had cannot cue PL-8s. For then to cue PL-8s they would have needed a radar/avionics upgrade. In one post I read SY-80 was said to be a possible upgrade or the KLJ-6E .

There are pictures of older Chinese J-7IIs armed with PL-8 on this forum, I believe the missile is based on the Israel Python 3 and is a capable weapon with more range than most IR guided AIMs

I would like think they are PL-5s. I say the point below fit the PL-5 more than the PL-9.

  • The distance from the front fins to the tip is shorter. The PL-9 from photos, this distance looks longer.
  • The profile of the rear fins the AFZ image and the PL-5 have linger fins, looking at the top edge that is parallel to the body of the missile.
  • It is accepeted Zimbabwe received Pl-5s.

Check photos on this site.

I think you are right Chaminuka, I have seen photos of AFZ F-7s with both PL-5 and PL-7 missiles.

Photos of armed AFZ planes? Wow! Do you still have them? That artwork of 711 is the only one I have seen and I am dying to find some. Any idea which version of the PL-5?

I saw photos of the F-7s when they were still white in a Herald defence forces day newspaper supliment, the pair of F-7s were armed with 2 Orange Pl-7 training rounds and two 480 litre drop tanks. Unfortunately I do not have the photos
