Exported J-7

This may have been covered before so forgive me if I am covering old ground. According to the info-page on the J-7 it claims that...

"This design offered an excellent solution to the inherent low aspect ratio problem of a slender delta. The slighting larger wingspan and 8.17% more wing area also gave an increased internal fuel capacity (from 2,080kg to 4,165kg) and much enhanced manoeuvrability."

Now someone has asked me how is it possible for 8.17% wing area to translate into double the fuel capacity? Or is the data incorrect?

The data is incorrect but not where you think it is. The old J-7 wing does not hold fuel at all. Starting with the F-7M, which corresponds to the J-7IIA or something like that, the J-7 only started to have wings that were plumbed for external storage tanks but don't store fuel themselves. Previous to that model, going all the way back to the MiG-21F, the wings don't even have plumbing.

Thus if the J-7E wing now holds fuel, then the amount of fuel compared to the old J-7 wing is 100%.

Now for the entire plane, that can mean doubling the internal fuel capacity.

OK here us some information on the F-7PG. It looks the total internal capacity is 2,385 litres(including the fuel in wings) and not 4000 kg.

"Total internal fuel capacity 2,385 litres (630 US gallons; 524.5 Imp gallons, contained in six flexible tanks in fuselage and two integral tanks in each wing. Provision for carrying a 500 or 800 litre (132 or 211 US gallon; 110 or 176 Imp gallon) centreline drop tank, and/or a 500 litre drop tank on each outboard underwing pylon. Maximum internal/external fuel capacity 4,185 litres (1,105 US gallons; 920.5 Imp gallons).

I recently came across an article that Zimbabwe's Air Force had its radars upgraded - both ground stations and airborne. There was not much information besides that. Assuming the air force's F-7s allegedly delivered with JL-7As what could be the possible upgrade package?

Thanks.

The ground station radars, are they Chinese also?

Crobato would give a much better response, I will just take a crack at this. I remember SY-80 was always promoted as an export item. You can search up, it's performance is available in brochures. Or KLJ-6E. I'm not sure if KLJ-6E is exported though.

Thanks.

Yes the ground radars are said to be Chinese. The old network would have consisted of JY-9 and at least two CEIEC 408-C systems. See

for the CEIEC 408-C.

All J7 serie production for PLAAF have ceased already last year, as of export production of J7 also have all been ceased early this year, J7 assembly line have been ended. Remaining J7s in PLAAF will be progressively replaced by other newer fighter, part of those replaced J7s will be converted to unmanned aircraft or for training exercise purpose, rest to be sorted and melt down and reproduced into parts of newer aircraft.

Guess J-7s export is now also ended after hundreds of aircraft export, J7 served its purpose.

How do you know or where did you get the info that all J7 series production has stopped ?

I am sure J-7G and J-7MF still in production, they are very good fighter and do the job very well against any air force in the world but US
