Six months, from May 1 to end of October/beginning of November

but if you ask anyone what they think about St. Patrick's day, the only thing most people can come up with is "wearing green"...

You forget "drinking". :)

I still remember that there used to a show where the host went on the street (the Fifth Ave., I think) in New York city and asked people to identify some photos. We know that people who spend most of their time on the Fifth Ave. would be pretty affluent and educated. I was shocked that only one out of ten people could identify Winston Churchill. Most people thought the guy in the photo was some Jazz player... And many people can't even recognize FDR and thought he was some millionaire. These are some most recognizable figures in the Western world, and yet no one in America knows who they are... Talking about cultural influence.....

Which is why culture is about more than just what Joe Schmoe knows.

Issues came up from the trial run:
1. LOTS and LOTS of people. i hope whoever is planning to go do not go during the national holidays (labour day week and national day week)

2. Expensive food. bottled water for 5 yuan, and 2 vegetable buns for 10yuan. now it may sound cheap to you if you are converting it back to USD or something, but they re definitely a rip off in China.

3. Lots of garbage... either the expo park is shorthanded in cleaners or there are just too many people or people are simply too lazy to toss it in the garbage bin.

4. No water allowed inside the park, so yes you will need to either buy those 5yuan bottled water or drink at the water fountain (which I personally have a hard time picturing how they are gonna keep those things clean).

Heh, at least it's not as bad as the airports: 10 yuan for a bottle of water. I wonder how many visitors are going to try to sneak in water bottles due to the high price of water? Is food allowed in there?

Wouldn't be surprised if some local vendors would sneak in bottled water and sell them at a lower price lol.

Why won't they allow people to bring water in the first place? Is there a security issue involved somehow?

i would guess it's a similar reason to the airport rule.

PS: thread was moved to member's club room since this has nothing to do with strategic defence

bladerunner I'm confused, you said once before that you weren't Chinese?

In the odd post I have referred to having chinese ancestry or out of laziness, just saying chinese.

I thought Jwangyue was speculating on whether I was a Chinese PRC National and current resident/ and in tune with current Chinese attitudes in which case if i was I would know the answer to my question.. Thats why I said I wasnt. Chinese (in that context ) Perhaps I should have said NZ Chinese. but I didnt see the need nor do I like the term.

In fact any hint that I had any bilogical connection with being Chinese was when I responded in a heated exchange with another forum member who suggested that I was just another "Western China Basher" It came out when I wanted to impress upon him that not all China critics are Westerners.

Im a descendant of one of the first group of Chinese who left for the West in Mid 19th Century and coupled with the fact that various generations in our family have intermarried, myself and my children included there is very little Chinese appreciation left in me. ( cultural/ thinking) but physically I still look Chinese.
Just an interesting sidenote I have two blood cousins of fairly fair complexion, ethnically they would be 1/4 Chinese, they have European husbands and yet they have both had Children that show more Asian in them then the mother. In fact in one of the Children you would have to look really hard to determine a slightest hint of European and in this instance it was in the eyes.

Another interesting thing as well our family Surname ,although a Chinese word, it is not normally associated with a Chinese surname, and at times can be mistaken for a European one. It can often lead to strange experiences when applying for jobs. even in my Childrens time. We think there has been occassions where the applicant gets rejected just on name alone. But myself and my Children have made it to second base for a prelimanry interview. I can recall one occassion the look of surprise on the secretary's face when I walked through the door and announced myself. On one occassion one person couldnt stop blurting out that " "but you're Chinese"

Wow, it's statements like these that makes me doubt if your claim of Chinese ancestry. Seriously, it's just sad that you can only conceive of kung fu movies and chinese takeout as Chinese culture.

Ever heard of the "Butterfly Lovers"? Ever been to a Chinese New Year celebration in Toronto, New York, San Francisco, Vancouver? Ever visited an acupuncturist? Or a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner? Ever heard of the Pekin Opera, and Mei Lan Fang, who was making waves in the West in the early 20th century?

How many westerners don't know about Shaolin Monks, the Nanjing Massacre (thanks to Iris Chang), Mao Zedong, the Great Wall, the Forbidden Palace, the Terra Cotta Warriors, Feng Shui, Mahjong?

Where do you think the terms "chow down", "long time no see", "kow-tow", "chop-chop", "honcho" come from?

calm down, this is the internet. anyone can make any claim on anything, including who they are. just don't take it too seriously. better to pay more attention on the non-virtual life around you.

I think the term "Westerner" is meant by a person who goes by western thinking - if he said "caucasian", that would be a different matter (sorry, can't resist but to point that out >.<).

On topic, my dad and I might be returning to China during the september/october school holidays - and we plan on going to the Expo during that time, hopefully it won't be too hot in the shanghai late summer.
But what exactly is there to do at the fair; it's obviously not an amusement park - so does one just check out what every countries stall/building has to offer?
(We were meant to go to tibet as well for two weeks after shanghai, but because my citizenship's not a PRC one, I would have to go on an expensive "tibet for westerners" tour. -sigh- :()

I went to theBrisbane one in 88. Yip its a bit like a trade fair with culture thrown in. The China exhibit in that fare was a little disapointing, mainly artisan type products ceramics cotton products. Im sure there will be a better exhibit from them this time round.

In the 88 exhibit all the countries had their own eateries of varying sophistication. So it was a good place to sample food from around the world.
So Ill suppose they might have something similar.

If its anything like Brisbane you have to go over over several days to appreciate some cof the cultural shows.

Snap:You mean they have to have special tours for Asians. Middle Easterns and Africans?:D:D
