The ongoing Shanghai World Expo 2010 has received 50 million visitors as of 5:31 p.m. Friday, according to the Expo Coordination Bureau.

Also on Friday, the Expo Garden received 320,000 visitors for the day.

Since the beginning of September, daily number of visitors to the international cultural gala remained within 300,000 in most days, down from the average daily level for August when students spent part of their summer vacation at the Expo.

The bureau estimates, by the end of the Expo, that the number of visitors to the 184-day event will reach around 60 million. The Shanghai World Expo will end on Oct. 31.

Can't believe that there are still so many people going every day after 3 friggin months! :china: I guess my uncle, who lives in Shanghai, still needs to wait for a couple of weeks before he could visit all the pavilions.

"The Taiwan pavilion, which is designed by renowned Taiwanese architect Lee Chu-yuan, features a theme revolving around nature and soul.

The outside structure of the pavilion resembles a "sky lantern" or "Kong Ming lantern," which people fly during Chinese New Year and the Lantern Festival to pray for happiness, safety and health. It is a steel structure covered with smart film, a new kind of smart glass technology that adjusts to light under electric pressure to switch between a transparent and a semi-opaque state.

Hanging down from the roof of the Taiwan Pavilion is a gigantic globe made of a panoramic light-emitting diode (LED) screen, which will display projections of Taiwan's natural and cultural images."

China passed its target of 70 million visitors to the 2010 Shanghai World Expo today, a world record as the six-month-long exhibition enters its final week.

The tally was reached at 10:17 a.m. local time, according to the official website of the exhibition that opened in China’s financial hub on May 1. A total of 64 million people visited the 1970 Osaka World Expo in Japan, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

“The news that total visitors surpassed 70 million is exciting, and it is also an encouragement and a positive response,” the Expo organizers said in a statement on the website.

The number of visitors to the Expo in China’s richest city is more than 10 times the number who traveled to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The biennial exhibition is being held under the theme of “Better City, Better Life” with about 190 countries and 50 international organizations participating.

The site includes five central theme pavilions as well as hundreds of national and corporate exhibition sites.

A total of 837,400 people came to the event yesterday and 310,000 arrived today already, the organizers said on the website. Most visitors are Chinese.

People queued in the rain as a cold snap reached eastern China yesterday. Visitors have to wait for several hours to get inside popular pavilions while a family from China’s western province of Sichuan queued eight hours to get into Saudi Arabia’s pavilion, the Orient Morning Post reported today.

Biggest Day

As many as 1.03 million people visited the exhibition on Oct. 16, marking a daily record. Many could only walk around outside pavilions and all parades were canceled because of the large numbers, Xinhua reported.

Organizers used local television and information boards in public areas to try to persuade people not to enter the site that day.

Shanghai allotted 28.6 billion yuan ($4.19 billion) for building and operating the Expo, and 270 billion yuan on new infrastructure for the city, including two airport terminals and a three-year renovation of the historic Bund.

DECLARED AN astounding success by the international Expo body, the lights went out on the Shanghai World Expo yesterday after introducing a record 73 million visitors to a panoply of cultures and technologies intended to illustrate ideas for urban sustainability.

The scale of the Expo was awe-inspiring, attracting 246 participating countries and international organisations.

Both figures are records in the history of world fairs or expos, the first of which was held in London in 1851. China spent 28.6 billion yuan (€3 billion) on the event and many billions more on improving subways, roads, tunnels, airports and other public facilities."




The closing ceremony for the Shanghai World Expo 2010 is held in the Expo Cultural Center at the World Expo Park in Shanghai, east China, on Oct. 31, 2010.
