The system would be based on Israel's Arrow 3 model and would be capable of intercepting long-range ballistic missiles. "We must prepare ourselves," said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
"[A missile shield] is certainly among the things we are discussing, for good reason," Scholz told broadcaster ARD.

"We must all prepare ourselves for the fact that we have a neighbor presently ready to use force to assert its interests."

Arrow 3 has anti-ballistic capability. I do not think SAMP has the same capabilities.
But in Israel Arrow 3 is part of a multi-layered defense system. It is no good having it alone.
The David's Sling missile is also part of the network.

I doubt any of them would be that effective against modern systems like Avangard or Zircon tough.

8 F-16C/D block 70 for $200 million each? I get it comes with full bells and whistles and with spares, but what on earth?
These contracts are for far more than the aircraft. You need the on the ground support system. From the fuel trucks to simulators. Tools, spares flight training, mechanic training, ground control systems, maintenance log and inventory. Sometimes even hangers and runway upgrades.

I get that...but still. We are talking about 8 F-16s. Maybe the plan is to buy a few new to set up the support infrastructure and get up to squadron capacity with used F-16s.

I wonder what a hypothetical counter offer for J-10s would be.

*BREAKING*

The German Bundestag is set to debate the active procurement of Arrow-3 systems from Israel this Wednesday; the first active step taken by the country to expand Europes ballistic missile defense capabilities.

Still no mention of THAAD procurement.

Arrow-3 is more or less a THAAD equivalent I think. Actually it should be better than THAAD.
But it is kind of pointless. It was designed to intercept earlier generation ballistic missiles.
It will be of no help against Kinzhal, Zircon, and Sarmat with Avangard warheads.

Kinzhal has been in service for years, Zircon is in mass production, and Sarmat will be in service this year.

These guys don't understand they are going to enter an arms race with Russia. But Russia is almost a decade ahead of them in terms of strategic weapons. The smart thing would have been not to drop out of the weapons reduction treaties in the first place. The Russians warned them they had loads of programs from the Cold War they could easily dust off, but of course they did not listen. The Russians started their programs when the US left the ABM Treaty once they got GBI working. Remember originally GBI was to have been put in Europe as well but then Obama cancelled that in favor of AEGIS Ashore because of cost concerns.

NATO will have Dark Eagle in service next year. But by that time Russia should have A-235 Nudol and S-500 in service. By the time they put their offensive systems in place, Russia will have their defensive systems in place, and by the time they have their defensive systems in place, then Russia will likely have asymmetric offensive systems like Poseidon and Burevestnik in service. It is just a neverending pointless spiral.
