>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> MODERATOR COMMENT <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

A.Man, SamuraiBlue, Blackstone, this thread is not about the Diaoyu/Senkakus Island dispute. This thread is about the ADIZ that China has set up in that part of the China Sea. Talking about the aircraft they use to patrol it, talk about how other nations, both commercially and militarily view it and operate within it, specific intercepts/incidents, the technology involved in all of that...all of these are rfair game for this thread.

This is now the third time this warning has been given on this thread. Time for consequences.

A.Man, posting a one-sided analyisis, independent or not, on the soverignty issue violated the posted warnings here.

SamuraiBlue, responding to that post and calling it propaganda violated the posted warnings here.

Blackstone, responding to SB and calling his comments a "stinking lie," violated the posted warnings here.

Each of you know better and I am really sorry because I know and like all three of you, but each of you will receive a :

ONE WEEK SUSPENSION FROM SD.

The next infraction of this clearly stated warning will get a four week suspension. It will be permanent after that.

SO JUST STAY ON TOPIC AND STAY AWAY FROM THAT DISCUSSION!

Do not respond to this moderation.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Chinese fighter jets flew within a few dozen meters of Japanese military planes over the East China Sea, Japanese officials said on Sunday, prompting the defense minister to accuse Beijing of going "over the top" in its approach to disputed territory.

Chinese SU-27 fighters came as close as 50 meters (170 feet) to a Japanese OP-3C surveillance plane near disputed islets on Saturday and within 30 meters of YS-11EB electronic intelligence aircraft, the ministry said.

"Closing in while flying normally over the high seas is impossible," Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera told reporters in comments broadcast on TV Asahi.

"This is a close encounter that is outright over the top."

Onodera said Japan conveyed its concerns to the Chinese side through diplomatic channels. He also said the Chinese planes were carrying missiles.

A ministry official said it was the closest Chinese warplanes had come to aircraft of Japan's Self-defense force.

China's foreign ministry could not be immediately reached for comment.

Tensions have been running high between China and its neighbors over Beijing's assertive stand on claiming land and sea territory.

China lays claim to Japanese-administered islets in the East China Sea, known as Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese. It is also pressing its claim to almost all the South China Sea, brushing aside claims by several southeast Asian states.

China's proclamation last November of an air defense zone covering disputed islands and areas in the South China Sea have raised concerns that a minor incident in disputed areas could quickly escalate.

Sino-Japanese ties have long been strained by allegations in China that Japan has not properly atoned for its wartime aggression and by the spat over the uninhabited islands.

Japan scrambled fighter jets against Chinese planes 415 times in the year ended in March, up 36 percent on the year, while in waters near the disputed islands, patrol ships from both countries have been playing cat-and-mouse, raising fears of an accidental clash.

Japanese land, sea and air forces joined last week to simulate the recapture of a remote island, underscoring Tokyo's concerns about the security of the islets.

Tensions between China and its neighbors have also risen sharply in the South China Sea in recent weeks, following the deployment of a Chinese oil rig in waters also claimed by Vietnam. The deployment sparked anti-Chinese riots in Vietnam.

The Philippine foreign ministry this month accused China of reclaiming land on a disputed reef in the South China Sea and said it appeared to be building an airstrip.

Re: China Flanker Thread II

Well, a few months ago some of us wanted photos to prove PLAAF planes were doing interceptions of planes in the ADIZ.

We've heard that they have, but they seem to have stayed their distance most of the time.

This looks to be one of the closer interceptions, and funnily enough it was the JSDF releasing pictures.

---

And I'm not sure if within 50m is considered over the top. I think I've seen pictures of interceptions at about that range.

The Interception Goes both ways.

China's defense ministry said jets were scrambled in the East China Sea on Saturday after Japanese aircraft entered its air defense zone during maritime exercises with Russia.

...

"Japanese military planes intruded on the exercise's airspace without permission and carried out dangerous actions, in a serious violation of international laws and standards, which could have easily caused a misunderstanding and even led to a mid-air accident," the statement said.

China had proposed urgent talks, it said, and demanded that Japan "respect the lawful rights of China's and Russia's navies ...".

Still a flawed and incredibly biased article, but this one at least gives arguments from both sides.

JSDAF is clearly trying to spy on the exercise. What is the big deal here?

This is vintage Cold War stuff.

Happened all the time during the Cold War between US, NATO, the Soviet Union, and Warsaw Pact militaries.

Sometimes there were collisions and the loss of life.

50 meters is a close interception, but it is not horribly dangerous.

I'd like to see where the flight profile of the P-3 and other Japanese Maritime aircraft in question took them specifically in regard to the Islands, AND to the joint Russian/Chinese naval exercises at the time. I am almost willing to bet that the latter was as much the cause of this interception as anything else.

And if so...what of it? As I said, it is not abnormal for nations who are extremely wary of each other.

From the Reuters article:
Japan's defense minister accused Beijing of going "over the top" in its approach to disputed territory.
Did the Japanese minister use the words "disputed territory" or their Japanese equivalent?
That would, I think, be a significant diplomatic change.
