China and Japan resumed high-level talks on maritime issues, as the two nations seek to smooth relations strained by a territorial dispute.
Officials exchanged views on the East China Sea and maritime cooperation in a two-day meeting held Sept. 23-Sept. 24 in eastern China’s port of Qingdao, China’s official Xinhua News Agency reported yesterday.
Talks included officials from Chinese ministries including those for foreign affairs and defense, and from the Japan Coast Guard and defense ministries, Xinhua reported.
China and Japan are sparring over uninhabited islands in the East China Sea, over which China declared an air-defense identification zone in November. The nation is also involved in disputes with Southeast Asian countries including Vietnam and the Philippines over ownership of islands in the South China Sea.
President Xi Jinping has pledged to turn China into a maritime power and make its military a modern fighting force.
