TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Voice of America (VOA) has revealed a list of potential China policy advisors for U.S. presidential candidate Joe Biden, including many who were in the Obama administration.

In an

published Friday (Oct. 23), the Washington-based radio network pointed out that Biden's advisors on China-related policies will likely consist of former Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken, former ambassador to the U.N. Samantha Power, former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Kurt Campbell, Deputy Director at the Center for a New American Security Ely Ratner, and former National Security Advisors Jake Sullivan, Susan Rice, and Thomas Donilon.

VOA said the list was based on currently known information and that almost everyone mentioned had held senior positions related to China policy during the Obama era. It said although these former officials will reevaluate the U.S.' “engagement policy” with China, they are generally against the "new cold war" and "decoupling from China" concepts encouraged by President Donald Trump.

David Firestein, president of the George H.W. Bush Foundation for U.S.-China Relations, told VOA that it is possible Biden will revisit some of Obama’s policies on China since they share many of the same advisors. He said Team Biden has a fundamentally different perception of Beijing from the Trump administration, so it is inevitable that the American strategy toward China will change if the Democratic nominee wins the November election.

Meanwhile, VOA said Biden's potential China policy advisors believe the U.S. should shift its focus from "changing China" to "enhancing its own competitiveness." It also said they are planning to repair diplomatic relations with other countries without isolating Beijing and that they believe cooperation with China on topics such as climate change, the coronavirus pandemic, and nuclear proliferation is necessary.

Ely Ratner from CNAS might be a hawk, I read somewhere that he proposed join military drills with Taiwan as deterrence. Tom Donilon IIRC is in BlackRock right now, hope he won't be that nearsighted. The rests are Obama's old team.

US and China are competing over 5G, AI, Quantum Computing, etc.. etc..

I agree, private-industry competition will persist forever. That's the nature of economics and technology.

Biden presidency will not change the course of US - China rivalry.

Well, Biden did ADMIT that he will remove all tariffs on Chinese-made products. So that is a massive admission that the course of US-China rivalry will change.

You would be a fool to think US - China relations will reset under Biden or any body else.

Is that why Biden's top pick for Treasury Secretary is Lael Brainard , a Harvard trained PhD who helped China get into the WTO, help get NAFTA/outsourcing deal passed, and resisted against labelling China a currency manipulator?

I'd call that a reset to the Obama-era, which is a significant change to fundamental US-China relations.

It's easy to say overly generalized statements without any evidence. What evidence do you have that US-China relations will continue the Trump containment/trade war?

Biden aside, should he got elected what would happen with Lincoln Project? I predict that they will split from Democrat ASAP similar to KMT CPC split after WW2. The question is will they support "trumpist" candidates?

Hi Petrolicious88,

Spot on bro, Trump had done all the heavy lifting and Biden had inherited a great bargaining tool,

False, there is no bargaining tool, because Biden already ADMITTED he wants to remove tariffs on Chinese-made goods because it's hurting American middle class and consumers.

You lose all leverage in any negotiation if you reveal your target goal ahead of time.

Plus, Biden's top pick for Treasury Secretary is Lael Brainard , a Harvard trained PhD who helped China get into the WTO, help get NAFTA/outsourcing deal passed, and resisted against labelling China a currency manipulator. Source:

China would get very favorable negotiator that wants to end the tariffs. So long as there is no enforcement mechanism/snap-back provisions, China can promise the moon, Biden can claim victory, and both moves on. Just like the old times.

There will be a civil war amongst the Republican party, with one side wanting to return to "normalcy" and another side wanting to continue Trump-brand of Republicanism (e.g. twitter fury, shoot-from-the-hips). Lincoln Project wouldn't want anything to do with Trumpism if he loses. Lincoln Project will try to white-wash history to pretend that Republicans never enabled Trump, but they did enable him and support him.

Everyone here who thinks Sleepy Joe is going to be better than Trump is in for a rude awakening. I prefer Trump because it's like watching Rome collapse in color.

The big question is will congress allow that? Or will they try to stone Wall?

That Biden is picking Lael Brainard for Treasury Secretary more than indicates he's going to aim for a reset. Biden may sound like tough on China to compete with Trump, but look at Biden's actions, not his rhetoric.

Doubt it. Epoch times editors are trash just like other Chinese based english language newspapers. They can bitch about CCP, but Republicans have more enemies than the just the CCP.
