Unless a senior officer active in the PLAN itself with knowledge to comment on CV-18 made the statement, I wouldn't put too much stock in it.

We all have enough common sense to recognize when something doesn't smell right, as it is in this case.

They also claimed "The Fujian may well begin far-seas training this year", which is both a far more realistic claim and also a more interesting one.

It has been suggested that GJ-21 has participated in integrated joint trainings with Fujian's CVW (J-15Ts, J-35s and KJ-600s) over Bohai recently. Posted by @沉默的山羊 on Weibo.

Over the sea and sky, multiple J-15T fighters, J-35 fighters, and KJ-600 early warning aircraft conducted system-of-system coordinated training, while a new type of naval carrier-based aircraft flew alongside and performed reconnaissance (海军某新型舰载机伴飞侦察)... Recently, a PLA Navy carrier strike group organized realistic combat training in the waters of the Bohai Sea. Flight crews of various aircraft types, organized into combat groups, successfully completed over ten joint training subjects, including reconnaissance and early warning, as well as air defense and anti-missile operations. Through live-force confrontation, they honed their skills for combat readiness.

Wouldn't be surprised if we get footage of this very soon. Or at least some footage from the Fujian's last two training sessions that we are still yet to see. Tomorrow is the 77th Anniversary of the PLAN.

Slightly off topic, but now that Zhang Youxia is gone, I do wonder if we’ll see a slight change in how the PLA discloses information. I’ve heard a vague rumour that Zhang was particularly strict about these things.

Personally I would not have expected them to disclose "a new type of naval carrier-based aircraft" with the Fujian so soon, or that the Sichuan is heading to the SCS.

Strict information control is an inherent characteristic of the PLA, not a personal preference of any particular general. So the answer is: everything remains the same.

I mean, the rumour I heard was that he personally stopped a magazine article about some 9/3 parade equipment from being published.

Zhang Youxia also wasn't just "a particular general"

There is a difference between "strict information control" and "strict information control". If you go back 10-15 years, you will notice some differences. Like something like this is unthinkable today: "Online media reported that China’s fifth-generation stealth fighter, the J-20, completed its first flight."
