I believe the Chinese “old” most likely means “great”, or “grant”...
In the case of “老三” (”old three” means third child), here “old” doesn’t mean great or fearsome. It actually shows thw cuteness of being the younger child.

To Intrepid,

No... Again you shouldn’t use your language logic to presume the meaning of Chinese. “Old 3” simply used to discribe your third child (2nd or 4th etc). But, you can’t use this logic to discribe other things at all. If you read carefully what I said in the previous post, I said that for ships we would call “no 1 ship”, “no 2 ship”, “no 3 ship”... (of cause here the word ship can be replaced by carrier). That’s why Chinese speakers like me who truly supported this forum in the past 15 years or so are frustrated on this translation issue. Yes, there hasn’t been a direct statement from the officials saying “002型航母” (the word “型” aka “Type” is missing for some people’s liking). But since “002航母” (Carrier-002) has been confirmed so many times last year and earlier this year. And these for natiave Chinese speakers are more than enough to call the carrier “Type-002” or simply “carrier 002”. But for few non-native Chinese speakers, they just keep insisting their own logic and somehow thinking using the number 001A is still more appropriate , even though that has never been confirmed once officially.

The normal way to designate something whose official name is unknown is to count it. I think that will be easy for the first dozen Chinese aircraft carriers.

In Chinese it is “no 1 ship”, “no 2 ship”, “no 3 ship” ...
In English it is "1st ship", "2nd ship", "3rd ship" ...
In German it is "1. Schiff", "2. Schiff", "3. Schiff" ...

And everyone can understand it and assign it precisely.

Agreed. If some people insisting on the word "型" (Type) to appear on the official designation before accepting 002 as its official designation, then we should at least call it the 2nd Chinese Carrier or No 2 Chinese Carrier. But mind you, in chinese we don't often use the word "型" (Type) in ship designation. Yes, they used it for Liaoning. But, they might not use that word for this one, though. As officially people often call Type-052D DDG simply "052D驱逐舰" (052D Destroyer), like how they currently call this carrier "002航母" (002 Carrier). The missing word "型" (Type) doesn't really matter in Chinese unlike in English.

wait ... only now I've realized the whole point here (in the SDF) is, according to me, to avoid any confusion while posting the news

(and the point here isn't, again according to me, always try to use an official designation; by 'not always' I mean case(s) where it's unconfirmed,

and I of course mean to keep

in the name of CV-16 Liaoning Thread II ...News, Views and operations thread,

and I of course mean to use THE official designation ONCE IT'S KNOWN in the other threads)

OK you may now tell me I'm saying this because some time ago I posted pictures of so called Type 001A in Type 002 (CV-18) Carrier News & Discussions thread LOL that's what I did, yeah

so? so Yesterday at 6:39 PM

The Chinese do not think that the first domestic aircraft carrier is simply a replica of the former Soviet aircraft carrier, but China designed and built itself, so it should not be called 001A.

What a waste of time, reading the last 2 pages has been.

Please stop, Let it go and wait for the official designation and then change the thread name.
That’s the problem most natiave Chinese speakers have with the few member here insisting we still need to wait for “official” designation when we have already had the official designation ie. “002航母” which translates as “Carrier 002”...
