Still tho, if the entire upper part of the island gets a coat of bunker oil soot every time she sails it is probably incredibly annoying to her sailers who have to clean her up. I wonder if switching to marine diesel like USN did would alleviate this. The 956 and 956EMs already switched to burning diesel iirc.
The 054A/B series using diesel doesn't seem to be immune to the problem, and a radical solution might be to blacken the top masts.

They just don't clean it up and let it collect for awhile. Look at old pics from US' conventional supercarriers.

So US ships need to be painted in rust color ?

I think rust is much worse, something that we don't see a lot on Chinese fleet. People are searching problems where there's none.

It's strange, really. Clear indication of catapult tests, yet... Nothing? Crickets?

Because it's not as "clear" as one might think. They just talked about this in a podcast on 西葛西造舰, but basically he says they only conducted touch and go this time because of how much work it is (various planes, various sea states, etc). And the mark on the jet blast deflectors should be a lot more clear. Timestamp 1:14:10

But also apparently he has some insider info on this, so we'll see if it's true.

Eh, I don't buy it. Touch-and-go's wouldn't involve the front landing gear, yet there are marks of such.

The jet deflectors also wouldn't be as scorched as you'd think, if there were only a few flights. IIRC the ones on the Ford look barely touched initially.

I think he's correct. The blast deflectors would have more prominent sooting and there would be tire marks around the catapults themselves:

We'll need to be patient. Maybe there were cat launches but the evidence is more likely to be just touch and go.

The picture you quoted is after longtime usage though. I said initially as in like, initially.

Just a handful of flights obviously wouldn't have marks as obvious as that.

I do have a hunch that the Fujian will conduct several more times of sea trials than Shandong prior to commissioning, judging by the new technologies (EMCAT, EMAGS, etc) that need to be tested and verified.

In the meantime, Fujian commissioning by the end of this year if not in early 2026 should still be possible.
