They have even painted the landing strip. I would not be surprised if they starting doing helicopter landing/takeoff tests soon. Unless the short time of these propulsion tests means there's something wrong with the propulsion of the ship.

I would not be surprised if it became operational either late this year or early next year but there are folks here with better experience in making those estimates than me. It does seem to be progressing a lot faster than the Liaoning though.

I doubt it if anything goes wrong just a day before the ship return. The official PLA spoke man announce that everything goes well

BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Sea trials of China's second aircraft carrier have been conducted safely and smoothly and achieved the anticipated goals, China's Ministry of National Defense said Thursday.

Wu Qian, spokesperson for the ministry, said at a regular press conference that the aircraft carrier left a dock at Dalian Shipyard in northeast China's Liaoning Province in recent days for the sea trials to test its equipment platform and facilities.

Wu said the operation was a normal arrangement in the construction plan of the carrier and its construction is being carried forward steadily in accordance with the plan.

Bring on dual carrier sustainment deployment in 2019 :cool:

Now how's that going to happen? Does the PLAN have;

1)Logistical supply line to main two CV strike groups?
2)Trained up crews & pilots?
3)Enough aircraft?
4)Does either ship have have a jet maintenance shop?
5)Fully functional aircraft maintenance departments aboard both ships? High performance jet aircraft do have major maintenance needs.

I'll stop there.

There's a lot involved in sending a properly trained and fully operational Aircraft Carrier on a deployment. There really is.

I do not believe they have two full air wings built yet...but they are building more J-15s and will reach that number sooner rather than later.

As to crews, I expect they will take some group of personnel from the CV-16, including some senior NCOs over to the C-17 and have them help more quickly train a CV-17 crew.

Time will tell.

But it is only the second trial and it has been at see a total of 10-12 days. Still lots to do.

They may turn it over to the PLAN by the spring depending on what they get done between now and then.
