The Shandong aircraft carrier formation passed through the Bashi Channel at noon (July 6) and sailed towards the Western Pacific. The aircraft carrier formation returned to the South China Sea via the Bashi Strait at sunset, setting a precedent for the Shandong aircraft carrier formation to return to and from the Bashi Strait on the same day for the first time.

Related - Shandong CV and one 052DG DDG (#164 Guilin) photographed from a Murasame-class DDG of the JMSDF. Posted by the official Twitter account of the Joint Staff of the JSDF.

One 055 DDG (#106 Yan'an) and one 054A FFG (#571 Yuncheng) also accompanied Shandong during their recent maneuver across the Ryukyus.

What we have heard the most about Liaoning before she became Liaoning basically revolves around how Varyag was bought by a Chinese businessman called Xu Zengping (徐增平) under the cover of converting Varyag into a floating casino in Macao, and how Varyag made her way from Maykolaiv Shipyard all the way to Dalian in 2002.

However, what explicitly comes before the towing journey from Ukraine to China - All the intricate details involved in the process, all the momentous and critical times involved throughout the process to the eventual purchase and possession, and how close China actually came to losing Varyag to greed, incompetence and Taiwan - Weren't as well known and understood to the masses.

This exceptional documentary by @温竣岩 on Bilibili goes into extreme details throughout the whole process based on memoirs written by Li Zhongxiao (李忠效) (1st Class Write of the PLAN Political Department). I strongly recommend finishing the entire video.

(only available in Chinese, unfortunately)

To sum it up - Please remember and salute Shao Chun (邵淳) (1st photo), Wu Yu (吴宇) (2nd photo, left) and Wu Wei (吴巍) (2nd photo, right) - These three guys are the actual, real heroes who enabled bringing the Varyag to China - Of which, apart from contributing to China having her first ever aircraft carrier - They managed to lay a 20-year-worth of shortcut path for China's entire aircraft carrier and naval aviation development programme.

On the flipside, Xu Zengping (徐增平) is more of a greedy opportunist that is more concerned about lining his own assets and extravagant spending than actually the Varyag itself (whilst trying to make a name for itself regarding the purchase of Varyag).

The videos describe the carrier battle group (CVBG) “Outer Defense Zone” (外防区), also called the “Depth Defense Zone” (纵深防区), as 185 km to 400 km away from the aircraft carrier.
The “Middle Defense Zone” (中防区), or the “Area Defense Zone” (区域防区) is described as 45 km to 185 km away from the aircraft carrier.
The video details the “Inner Defense Zone” (内防区), otherwise called the “Point Defense Zone” (点防区), as 100 meters to 45 km away from the aircraft carrier.

CNS Shandong launches aircraft in the Philippine Sea. JMSDF Photo

China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy Shandong Carrier Strike Group conducted 240 fighter aircraft launches and recoveries and 140 helicopter take-offs and landings over the course of a week operating in the Philippine Sea, according to a Tuesday news release from Japan’s Joint Staff Office (JSO).

The CSG is still deployed in the area. On Tuesday, the JSO issued a release covering the daily location and composition of the Shandong CSG from July 9 to Monday. Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyers JS Akebono (DD-108) and JS Kirishima (DDG-174), and destroyer escort JS Jintsu (DE-230) shadowed the PLAN CSG, according to the JSO. The JMSDF ships likely deployed on a rotational basis to shadow the PLAN CSG rather than all three ships shadowing the CSG at the same time.

Tuesday’s release includes the day of the initial sighting of the Shandong CSG on July 9. Japan Air Self-Defense Force fighter aircraft scrambled in response to the carrier’s fighter launches.

The positions given by the release are by distance relative to Miyako Island in southwest Japan and include a map showing the Shandong’s CSG’s position each day. So far, the CSG has been operating largely in the same area east of the Luzon Strait between Taiwan and the Philippines’ main island of Luzon. This is a departure from last year’s late October to November deployment in the Philippine Sea, where the CSG also operated midway between the Philippines and Guam.

The Shandong CSG’s current deployment to the Philippine Sea is the first one it has conducted this year. Last year, the CSG deployed to the area three times, including a 19-day deployment in April, followed by a five-day deployment in September and a 12-day deployment from late October to early November.
