It seems like the mainstream media has been out of touch with the views held by much of the US society.
At first, it would appear that right-wing populism is a political view of the minority, not the majority, then it would appear that anti-intellectualism is the view held by a small minority, now it would appear it has become a deep-ingrained problem, strong enough to cripple even basic response to a crisis. Anti-vax used be seen as opinions held only by a few exasperated soccer moms, now it appears to be a commonly held view throughout all segments of society.
Can you remember why they were named variant A. B. C. To me A would be the first strain and so on.
It could be earlier since Brazil has already received the interim report in early Dec and should be available to the public on Dec 15. But I guess Bolsonaro would do anything to delay the rollout.

You're right. The alphabetical order follows the time progression of the mutation.
That was how the different variants of the virus were named in one of the earlier studies of the virus genome. Each of the variants (A, B, C ...) actually represents a group of the virus subvariants which is only different from each other by one to a few mutations.
This way, variant A in China maybe just one or two mutations away from let's say the variant A in Australia.
