thought a surgical face mask would be good for just for like half of an hour (or less), and then (or sooner) should be replaced, but what do I know

surgical mask is good only for one shift work, it goes together with other personal protective devices. Can not change them while inside a bio-security area. For general public use , it is not so critical but change as often as piratical. Can not reuse uncleaned and unsanitized masks due to cross-contamination.
Further info on sanitizing alcohol I mention before. Pure alcohol (100%) is not as effective because after initial scotching the bacterial, it create a sort of protective surface cover for the bacterial by blocking further penetration of the alcohol.

Yes, that's true, but only if it's consumed in large quantities, and for a period of time. When I was younger working in a place that sells Myths. We get lots of, how should I put it, people that's down on their luck, and don't have much money to buy real alcohol, they come in to our place and buy this to drink, because it is alot cheaper!

So I'm sure a little bit on the mask wont do any harm.

my cousin in China hit me up on wechat ask me to help him buy some N95 masks to send back to guiyang, but even now here in Dallas area of Texas the CVS, walmart, kroger, costcos and even amazon, everywhere is sold out.... forget about N95, cannot even find normal masks anywhere anymore, and even the Home Depot masks for dust filtering are gone!

Maybe office supplies stores, hardware, or Home Depot. All of them sell N95. I have stocked up some for the flu season. Most of my relatives in HK or China don't need the masks yet but some in the US are asking me for some.

In my opinion, eating of wild animals should be banned out right. It will be much easier to control and regulate the handling of raw meat when everything can be carefully monitored.

Back in the day when people were poor, people had no choice but to find wild animals for consumption. Nowadays, China no longer has such problem. In fact, it is the wealthy people who tend to eat wild animals for seeking excitement and adventure.

In addition to potential weird and exotic diseases carried by wild animals, having a market for wild animals means poaching and potential extinction of precious animal species. The huge population in China means they have a gigantic market for wild animals and a hugely efficient way to destroy any exotic animal species.

There has been no obvious nutritional benefit of eating wild animals over livestock. Harms of eating wild animals massively outweigh the benefit.

I myself, as well as my entire family, have not eaten any wild animals in our entire lives. We have lived a happy and pleasant life. We are all smart and healthy and capable of doing everything humanly possible. We don’t need wild animals. So why risk so much for no apparent benefit?

Thanks for the info. It is clearer now. But that leads to another question. If it remain effective, etc. Then why even bother washing it?

It will stay effective as long as you don’t mess with it. “Messing with it” means taking it off and putting it back on, etc. As long as it stays in place, it will be effective. As soon as you “mess with it”, you will most likely contaminate the side facing your face. Then you cannot use it again. And it will be nearly impossible to decontaminate something that has been contaminated.

70% alcohol is effective to maintain the cleanliness of something that is already clean. Also, the same with UV exposure. It seems that many hold the myth that shining UV light is enough to kill bacteria and virus. That’s not true at all. UV is good for maintaining cleanliness, not decontamination. I don’t think it is effective to decontaminate. The standard protocol to clean viral contamination in biology/medical labs involves extensive washing with bleach and autoclave (pressured steaming for extensive time). No civilian has access to any of the equipment necessary for decontaminating viral contact.

H5N1 is a far deadlier virus to those who contract it. Nearly 60 percent of H5N1 patients die after contracting the sickness, compared to two percent of Wuhan coronavirus (2019 nCoV) patients thus far.

Yes, having a washed mask is better than no mask. High temperature will degrade virus. Remember a fever is to kill pathogens/viruses.

We typically don't reuse masks because it's more convenient to throw it away.

In surgery, you can get bone dust or blood which means the mask has to go. In this situation, at most you will get someone's sneeze particles.

So washing or maybe even steam/high pressure cooker can probably work a few times.

If no person has ever been reported to be a victim of H5N1, then how did they discern that the human mortality rate is a cartoonishly high 60%? Mental filter is required when reading things on the internet.
