my cousin in China hit me up on wechat ask me to help him buy some N95 masks to send back to guiyang, but even now here in Dallas area of Texas the CVS, walmart, kroger, costcos and even amazon, everywhere is sold out.... forget about N95, cannot even find normal masks anywhere anymore, and even the Home Depot masks for dust filtering are gone!
I've heard this complaint a lot and I just don't understand, do people hate eBay? There are tons of factory seals N95 masks on eBay for sale always and everyone's freaking out like they can't find any masks at their local stores.

I believe washing masks can work. Wash it with hot water.

The mask is a physical barrier. The virus survives a few hours outside of a host and even less under heat.

I think it's more complex than that. The fibres are interwoven so to catch micro-organisms. Once washed, they would have lost the fibre integrity. Also, I think there is some kind of disinfectant 8n the mask, which is why the makers say once open, its effectiveness is 24 hours. I maybe wrong as I'm no expert on this, just what my understanding is on this.

Even in parts of Australia, surgical masks have ran out. Pharmacies not selling them, claiming no stocks. Having to use recycled masks is better then nothing as long as it is cleaned and sanitized.
A good homemade sanitizer is a solution of 70% alcohol (methylated spirits) and 30% water. This ratio of 70/30 has been proven to provide the maximum effect. The water is readily absorbed by the alcohol to provide the correct length of time to kill bacteria before it is evaporated. Use with a spray bottle. Things sanitized by this solution should be air dried. Pure alcohol will only scotch the bacteria before evaporation.
Be warned: This type of alcohol ( methylated spirits) also known as cleaning spirits or industrial spirits is fatal when consumed. Causes blindness or organs failure.

thought a surgical face mask would be good for just for like half of an hour (or less), and then (or sooner) should be replaced, but what do I know

It’s not about cleaning the fiber and fabric, etc. It’s about improper handling of the masks during washing, drying and the following steps will contaminate the entire mask, especially the side directly touching your nose and mouth. That’s why they are one-time use only.

Even trained health care professional mishandle their equipment. In our labs, with strict rules, extensive training and sophisticated decontamination equipment, we get bacterial contamination every once in a while. Civilians are simply not equipped to correctly decontaminate anything. The simple thing is to avoid complex handling, thus one-time use.

Thanks for the info. It is clearer now. But that leads to another question. If it remain effective, etc. Then why even bother washing it?
