Coronavirus 2019-2020 thread (no unsubstantiated rumours!)

Unfortunately, I can. The virus was first discovered in China in November 2019. With the plethora of viral strains seen every year, there was no alarm, but each one is evaluated just in case. The head of China's CDC, Dr. Fu Gao, an expert on virology, made a mistake. He took the virus sample from Wuhan away from the scientists there because he wanted to publish its characterization. He spoke rashly and declared without evidence that according to his expertise, this virus cannot transmit from man-to-man. Because of his false assurance, no further investigation was taken against the virus from a public heath standpoint and he published it in a paper for himself. (This is, however, not to say that the virus surely would have been stopped had he been more vigilant, as such a virus with long incubation period capable of viral shedding in the absence of symptoms is incredibly difficult to stem early on.) He failed to recognize his first and foremost responsibility as the head of the CDC, which is to protect the public, but instead focused on publications in his own name. Now he's in deep deep shit.

would you link a source to this (LOL I don't mean the expletive in your last sentence, but the story of "Dr. Fu Gao")

PS. Why did you quote me when addressing a question to everyone (anyone)? Do not quote me when not specifically talking to me and do not quote me unless you are continuing off of my point.
oh I specifically quoted your post
#299 manqiangrexue, Wednesday at 2:20 PM
because of its content, for instance
You have no idea what the threshold is to distinguish an emergency from a false alarm much less judge the actions of anyone else.

in fact I had reread #299 manqiangrexue, Wednesday at 2:20 PM
before I connected the two points in the post you now quoted

They stated it is based not on spread inside China but on spread outside of China. US hasnt even gotten a new case per CDC. 1% globally. What spread??

There, the statement explicitly states that they are afraid that the disease will begin to spread somewhere in countries with a poor medical system, etc. I'm agree with this. Indeed China has a powerful economy, medical system and government apparatus to introduce effective quarantine, etc. but many other countries, in principle, cannot provide anything like this, especially in war zones, refugee camps etc. If the virus somehow break out there, this can lead to the emergence of a new and much more dangerous outbreak.

I think there are many interesting parallels between the Chinese response to 2019-nCov and the one child policy.

In both cases, China took extraordinary measures no western government would even contemplate, at great political and economic cost to China, which not only massively benefits the Chinese population, but also the world, in the long run.

It would have been so much easier and less economically and politically damaging for China just to follow standard WHO approved measures, much like the US did back in 2009 with Swine Flu, and then shrug and say it was inevitable when the virus spreads across the world.

It could then leverage its better funded and more advanced medical institutions to keep the number of infected and dead down, which would compare favourably to many other less fortunate parts of the world, and use those statistics to assuage public anger.

That’s why I suggest China fully co-operates with western PR focused evacuation flights. Let them take Chinese National partners, children, hell, they are welcome to take their blood pets as well if they want.

It’s not that I want the virus to spread and kill more people, but sadly given the scale of the outbreak, I think it’s pretty much inevitable now, with the only question a matter of when.

Best case scenario is that China keeps the virus bottled up long enough for a vaccine to become available, but that would only really benefit the rich developed world who can afford that.

On balance, it may be better for the virus to break out of China sooner rather than later, so that the rich western world would stop gleefully engaging in petty point scoring on the sidelines and engage in covert economic warfare and actually fully commit to the fight against this virus.

I bet the west would invest significantly more effort and resources towards trying to find a vaccine and cure then they are now if this virus was spreading uncontrollably in their own countries.

China develops rapid Coronavirus test that works in under 15 MINUTES

The test takes between eight and 15 minutes to produce a result and is currently being mass-manufactured at a rate of 4,000 kits per day, with the city government in Wuxi exploring efforts to boost production even further.

The first batch of kits has reportedly already been deployed to the frontlines at the epicentre of the outbreak, Wuhan, in Hubei province.

Canada could really use this!

Can someone explain why the virus seems to be less deadly outside of Wuhan/Hubei ?

I suspect it's because people were all crowding into hospitals when the outbreak began, thus infecting the more vulnerable people in the population.

Outside of the epicentre, there were no hospital overloads like we saw in Wuhan.
